Ownership has changed
Petrobras has sold some refineries (for example RLAM in Bahia and Reman in Manaus), so procurement rules differ by owner.
Regap has a photovoltaic plant of 13,300 kW with about 20,000 solar panels, the first at a Petrobras refinery, and Petrobras plans 55.5 MW of solar capacity across its refining sites. Petrobras operates about ten refineries in Brazil, including Replan at Paulinia (415,000 barrels a day), Revap at Sao Jose dos Campos and Reduc at Duque de Caxias, each with classified process, storage and loading areas. If you are specifying an Ex-proof smartphone for Brazilian refineries, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Brazilian refineries: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.
| Check | What to look for | IS-04Z1 today |
|---|---|---|
| Ex marking | Group, category, protection concept, gas group, temperature class | II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 (target) |
| Gas group | IIA, IIB or IIC matched to the area drawing | IIC (target) |
| Temperature class | T-class below the ignition temperature of the gas | T4, 135 °C (target) |
| Where it applies | Brazilian refineries: Crude and product tank farms, Loading racks and jetties, Hydrotreater and hydrogen units | Classified by the site operator |

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Brazil Refineries. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Refineries sit in the south-east, south, north-east and elsewhere, so logistics differ by site.
Revamp projects are under way at the Presidente Bernardes (RPBC), Paulinia (Replan) and Duque de Caxias (Reduc) refineries, with hydroprocessing units planned at Revap and Refap.
Under the Strategic Plan 2024-28+ Petrobras budgets 16.7 billion US dollars across refining, transport and marketing, with 9 billion dollars earmarked for refining, which implies a long pipeline of shutdown and revamp work.
Petrobras' REPLAN refinery at Paulinia, Sao Paulo, is the largest in Brazil at 434,000 barrels per day, and the 208,000 b/d REPAR refinery at Araucaria, Parana, is another major site in the 2024-28 plan.
At the Gabriel Passos refinery (Regap) in Betim, Minas Gerais, capacity of 166,000 b/d is being raised by 25,000 b/d with start-up planned for 2027, and sustainable aviation fuel production is being introduced.
“Ex-proof” is shorthand for equipment carrying an explosion-protection marking (the Ex mark) that matches the area it enters. The marking states the protection concept, gas or dust group and temperature class, and it must be backed by a certificate issued by a recognised body, so a phone described as Ex-proof should come with a certificate number you can check.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to carry the marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. That is a target: certification is in progress, no certificate has been issued, and SAMS will publish the certificate numbers when they exist.
In Brazilian refineries. A marking check at a hydrotreater or hydrogen unit differs from one at a product tank farm, since gas group and temperature class follow the product. Reviewers compare the label with the site's classification drawings. The IS-04Z1 marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is not a certificate.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. It becomes a marking only when the certificate is issued; until then it is a design target.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, crude and product tank farms, loading racks and jetties, hydrotreater and hydrogen units. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Refinery contractors typically check Ex certification marking, temperature class and gas group against the area classification, plus local radio approval. The detail varies by site and contractor, so confirm the requirement with the refinery safety group and your contractor induction pack.
Often. During shutdowns and revamps, work shifts between live and isolated units, and permits define which areas are gas-tested. Many sites keep the same Ex requirement for the whole fence line to avoid errors, so confirm with the operator and the turnaround contractor.
Maintenance shutdowns are a natural point, because large contractor workforces enter classified areas, and Reduc has shutdowns scheduled in 2026. Plan MDM enrolment and charging well before mobilisation. Confirm timing and rules with the site operator, as schedules change.
