Aster
Aster, a joint venture led by Chandra Asri with Glencore, describes a 237,000-barrel-per-day refinery and 1.1 million tonne per year ethylene cracker at Pulau Bukom, plus petrochemical production on Jurong Island.
Singapore produces no crude oil or feedstock of its own, so the petrochemical complex depends on imported feedstock arriving through jetties and tank farms. Refining, olefins and chemical plants, tank farms and polymer handling create Zone 1 and Zone 21 areas. This page explains what to look for in an Ex-proof mobile phone for Singapore petrochemical sector, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Singapore petrochemical sector: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Singapore Petrochemical. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Aster, a joint venture led by Chandra Asri with Glencore, describes a 237,000-barrel-per-day refinery and 1.1 million tonne per year ethylene cracker at Pulau Bukom, plus petrochemical production on Jurong Island.
JTC and EDB describe Jurong Island as a hub for refining, olefins production and chemical manufacturing, with over 100 global companies.
Pulau Bukom has hosted Singapore's refining industry since 1961, when it became the site of the nation's first oil refinery.
Natural gas is the main fuel for Singapore's power generation, and the LNG terminal on Jurong Island can supply about 9 million tonnes a year on average to power and industry.
Energy and chemicals is Singapore's second-largest manufacturing sector, with more than 100 global chemicals companies, and the country is positioned as a hub for petrochemical production and trading.
Jurong Rock Caverns store crude oil, condensate, naphtha and gasoil underground, giving petrochemical plants on Jurong Island a large buffer of feedstock close by.
“Ex-proof” is shorthand for equipment carrying an explosion-protection marking (the Ex mark) that matches the area it enters. The marking states the protection concept, gas or dust group and temperature class, and it must be backed by a certificate issued by a recognised body, so a phone described as Ex-proof should come with a certificate number you can check.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to carry the marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. That is a target: certification is in progress, no certificate has been issued, and SAMS will publish the certificate numbers when they exist.
In Singapore petrochemical sector. The sector description gives Zone 1 for crackers, derivative plants and storage, and Zone 21 where polymer dust is handled. A marking check would therefore cover both gas and dust atmospheres. The IS-04Z1 target marking, II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, is a gas marking, not yet issued, and does not address dust.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. It becomes a marking only when the certificate is issued; until then it is a design target.
Likely candidates are cracker process units, chemical derivative plants, tank farms, polymer handling and dust areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Common examples include cracker and reactor areas, pump and compressor houses, tank farms, jetties and polymer or powder handling, where dust zones can also arise. Zone 1 is common around seals and vents, but classification is set per plant, so ask for the area drawing.
Singapore has no crude oil or feedstock of its own, so material arrives by sea, is stored in tank farms and caverns, and is sent through pipelines. This creates busy jetty and transfer areas where equipment control is strict.
Not safely. Each plant runs its own contractor and equipment approvals, so acceptance at one plant does not carry over to a neighbour. Prepare a datasheet pack for each. Confirm requirements with the site operator at every plant.
