Spain: logistics and access
Algeria is Spain's largest natural gas supplier, and since November 2021 gas has mainly arrived through the Medgaz pipeline, with LNG shipping as a possible supplement, so terminals and entry points are key sites.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe Android handset designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, built for the refineries, chemical parks and LNG terminals from Bilbao to the Campo de Gibraltar. This page explains what to look for in an ATEX and IECEx smartphone for Spain, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Spain: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Spain. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The classified areas, operators and sites below are the ones covered in the SAMS Spain market guide.
Algeria is Spain's largest natural gas supplier, and since November 2021 gas has mainly arrived through the Medgaz pipeline, with LNG shipping as a possible supplement, so terminals and entry points are key sites.
Spain had 4.1 GW of coal capacity in December 2021 and consumed 6.5 million tonnes of coal in 2022, with a plan to phase coal out by 2030, so coal-handling sites remain active for now.
Repsol is vertically integrated across exploration, refining, distribution, petrochemicals and power, with subsidiaries including Repsol Petróleo, Repsol Química, Repsol Exploración and Petronor.
Gas for power generation rose 52% in 2022 and total gas demand was 364.3 TWh, so gas-fired power stations and distribution networks have heavy maintenance and expansion work.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Spain. A Spanish procurement or HSE reviewer at Repsol, Petronor or Moeve would expect ATEX evidence under the EU framework, with certificate, marking and ambient range checked first. A dual ATEX and IECEx route also helps international EPCs and contractors working across the Spanish complexes. The IS-04Z1 certification is in progress and no certificate exists yet.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Spain is an EU member, so ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU applies to equipment and Directive 1999/92/EC to zoning. Zone 1 and Zone 2 devices should carry CE and Ex markings with Spanish instructions where required. Refineries typically add their own permit-to-work and device registration rules.
Yes, inland and southern summers are very hot and direct sun can raise surface temperatures. Check the maximum ambient rating on the certificate, avoid leaving devices on hot equipment and consider shade or cooling for batteries. Coastal sites also add salt air that affects ports and contacts.
The sheet states Spanish in the file and on the screen, on Android 16. Language packs and keyboard layouts should be confirmed during an evaluation unit trial, together with any site rules your IT team needs to enforce through EMM or MDM.
