Personnel and spares move by helicopter and supply vessel, so a failed device may take days to replace.
Indonesia's offshore oil and gas is spread across the Natuna area, the Java Sea and the Kutai Basin off East Kalimantan, where the Mahakam block is run by Pertamina Hulu Mahakam. Platforms and FPSOs are Zone 1 environments for process, drilling and maintenance crews. This page explains what to look for in an ATEX and IECEx smartphone for Offshore Indonesia, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Offshore Indonesia: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Offshore Indonesia. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The companies on site and the hazardous-area types a handset is likely to meet there.

Offshore units for fields such as Belanak in the Natuna Sea have been fabricated at yards in Batam before sailing out.
The Arun field in Aceh produced gas from the 1970s and is now largely depleted, and nearby operations included the North Sumatra offshore gas field, with assets passing to Pertamina in 2015.
The Abadi design uses a gas FPSO that treats the gas before sending it by subsea pipeline to an onshore LNG plant with two trains, and captured CO2 is to be reinjected into the well.
Ranai Airport is among the regency's main transport points, so crew changes and urgent spares for offshore gas work would typically move by air and then by supply boat; confirm routes with the operator.
INPEX operates the offshore Masela block's Abadi gas project with 65%, alongside Pertamina at 20% and Petronas at 15%, targeting about 9.5 million tonnes of LNG a year and up to 35,000 barrels of condensate a day.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Offshore Indonesia. An offshore HSE reviewer in the Natuna area, Java Sea or Kutai Basin would expect certificate evidence matched to the marking, with its schedule of conditions. The IS-04Z1 evidence is in progress. A dual route helps operators and contractors who move equipment between fields.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.
Likely candidates are wellhead and production platforms, fpsos and floating production units, drilling and workover areas, gas processing modules. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Usually yes for classified areas. Operators normally require equipment certified for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the location, supported by a permit to work. Confirm the exact certification marks the platform accepts for portable devices.
Indonesian is the national language and Malay is widely spoken in areas such as Natuna, while operators typically run safety briefings in English as well. Check that device interfaces and any emergency procedures can be used in the languages your crew needs.
Heat, humidity and salt spray are constant, and monsoon seasons affect sea state and crew changes. Check seals, ports and charging contacts for corrosion. IP68 is useful but is not explosion protection. Confirm approved devices with the operator.
