Urban shipyard
The 65,000 square metre yard is within the Rio metropolitan area across the bay from downtown.
Niteroi lies across Guanabara Bay from Rio de Janeiro and is mainly a commercial city. The Brasa yard there, a partnership of SBM Offshore and Synergy operating since 2012, integrates FPSO topside modules with hulls for pre-salt service, so shipyard hazardous areas are present. If you are specifying an ATEX and IECEx smartphone for Niteroi, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Niteroi: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Niteroi. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
The 65,000 square metre yard is within the Rio metropolitan area across the bay from downtown.
FPSO hulls berth at the yard for integration, for example Cidade de Marica in 2015.
The two power-generation modules for the P-56 platform were built by Rolls-Royce with UTC Engenharia at UTC's site in Niteroi, an example of offshore topside fabrication done in the city.
A 2011 Getulio Vargas Foundation study classed Niteroi as Brazil's richest city by share of high-income households, and it is the second-largest formal employer in Rio de Janeiro state.
The Mauá shipyard grew from a Niterói foundry and shipyard bought in 1846 by Baron of Mauá, and its 2000 joint venture with Jurong Shipyard added construction of oil and gas platforms.
The municipality contains part of the 2,400 hectare Serra da Tiririca State Park, created in 1991, which affects where new industrial or construction projects can be sited.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Niteroi. At the Brasa yard in Niteroi, reviewers working with FPSO integration projects will ask for certificate evidence suited to a shipyard, and Ex equipment in Brazil goes through Inmetro-accredited certification bodies. A dual ATEX and IECEx route is designed to help international hull and module contractors. The IS-04Z1 has no certificate yet.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.
Likely candidates are fpso module fabrication and integration, shipyard tank and hull work, fuel and gas handling at quaysides. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Mainly shipyard and fabrication work: platform modules, power packages and vessel outfitting for the Campos and Santos basins. Hazardous areas arise on tanks, engine spaces and process modules, so zone definitions come from the yard's classification plan.
Niteroi faces Rio across Guanabara Bay and is connected by road bridge and ferry, so commuting between yards and Rio offices is common. Ask local logistics staff about peak traffic when scheduling deliveries of equipment.
The sheet notes that the latest sourced integrations are 2014-2015, so current workload is not confirmed. A buyer should ask the yard directly. Confirm approvals and documentation requirements with the site operator before planning a fleet.
