LNG terminal
Shell Energy India operates the Hazira LNG terminal. The environmental clearance granted on 2 September 2025 covers expansion from 6.28 to 26.2 million tonnes a year, so this is an approved project rather than existing capacity.
Hazira is an industrial and port suburb of Surat in Gujarat, on the Tapti River about 8 km from the Arabian Sea. Its LNG terminal, gas and petrochemical plants and heavy engineering works create Zone 1 and Zone 21 areas. If you are specifying an ATEX and IECEx smartphone for Hazira, Surat, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.

A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Shell Energy India operates the Hazira LNG terminal. The environmental clearance granted on 2 September 2025 covers expansion from 6.28 to 26.2 million tonnes a year, so this is an approved project rather than existing capacity.
Wikipedia lists Reliance, ONGC, Shell, NTPC, L&T and KRIBHCO among the major Hazira operators, with L&T's shipyard and heavy engineering complex alongside.
The Hazira LNG terminal in Surat district was designed for 5 million tonnes a year of regasification, expandable to 10 million tonnes depending on demand.
The monsoon starts in late June and brings about 1,200 millimetres of rain by the end of September, with maxima around 32 degrees during those months.
Surat has a tropical savanna climate moderated by the sea, with April and May the hottest months at an average maximum of about 37 degrees Celsius.
Industrial names at Hazira include Essar, Kribhco, Shell, Larsen and Toubro, NTPC, ONGC, GAIL, Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation, UltraTech Cement and Reliance's Hazira Manufacturing Division.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Hazira, Surat. Hazira mixes an LNG terminal, gas and petrochemical plants and heavy engineering, so reviewers come from several organisations with different documentation habits. Presenting both ATEX and IECEx routes helps international operators and contractors compare evidence. The IS-04Z1 has no certificate yet, and both certification routes are in progress.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.
Likely candidates are lng regasification, gas processing, petrochemical plants, marine terminals. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Hazira is 22 kilometres from Surat and the drive takes about 30 to 35 minutes. Most visitors fly into Surat, and heavy plant traffic and monsoon rain can slow the road.
Hazira combines an LNG terminal, gas and power plants, a manufacturing division and a shipyard, so it has gas-hazard zones, hot-work areas and mixed-use industrial zones. Always get the area classification and equipment rules from the specific operator.
The terminal operator does, through its permit and area classification system, with PESO as national regulator. Rules usually cover approved equipment, permits and charging. Ask the operator's safety team what evidence they need from a supplier before a new handheld may enter.
