ATEX and IECEx Smartphone in Borouge Petrochemical

Borouge operates a polyolefins complex at Ruwais in Abu Dhabi, producing polyethylene and polypropylene. Hydrocarbon feedstocks and polymer powder give gas and dust classification, and the Borouge 4 expansion is bringing new plants onstream, including an XLPE plant that delivered its first customer batch in September 2026. This page explains what to look for in an ATEX and IECEx smartphone for Borouge at Ruwais, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.

What Borouge at Ruwais means for portable equipment

Expansion

Borouge 4 will add 1.4 million tonnes of capacity and make Ruwais the world's largest single-site polyolefin complex; it is operated by Borouge Plc on behalf of its owners ADNOC and OMV, so contractor activity continues during commissioning.

Ownership

Borouge Plc is 90 per cent owned by Borouge Group International, formed in March 2026 from Borouge, Borealis and NOVA Chemicals and backed by XRG (ADNOC's investment arm) and OMV.

More about Borouge at Ruwais that matters for portable equipment

Borouge at Ruwais: background

Borouge was founded in 1998 through a partnership between ADNOC and Borealis to build and operate a petrochemical complex in Al Ruwais Industrial City.

Borouge at Ruwais: logistics and access

Beyond the plant, Borouge uses logistics hubs, warehouses and gateways across the Middle East and Africa, Europe and Asia, so pellet packing and dispatch areas form a separate work zone.

Borouge at Ruwais: who works there

Borouge is a signatory of the chemical industry's Responsible Care Global Charter, so contractors can expect a formal safety-management culture on site.

Borouge at Ruwais: projects and investment

Three engineering and construction contracts worth about US$2.6 billion were signed for Borouge 3, including two polyethylene units, two polypropylene units and a 350,000 tonne a year LDPE unit.

The term · ATEX and IECEx

What “ATEX and IECEx” means for a smartphone

ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.

For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.

In Borouge at Ruwais. Borouge at Ruwais is a joint venture of ADNOC and Borealis, so a procurement reviewer would expect clear certificate numbers and markings for olefin and polyolefin process units. A dual ATEX and IECEx route suits the many construction contractors active during the Borouge 4 project. The IS-04Z1 certificates are still in progress.

Questions · Borouge Petrochemical

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an ATEX and IECEx smartphone in Borouge Petrochemical today?

No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.

What does an ATEX and IECEx smartphone in Borouge Petrochemical cost?

There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.

Is the IS-04Z1 ATEX and IECEx certified?

Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.

Which areas at Borouge at Ruwais would use it?

Likely candidates are olefin and polyolefin process units, polymer powder handling (zone 21), feedstock and gas storage, utilities and pipelines. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.

Is intrinsically safe the same as explosion proof?

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.

What hazards does a polyolefin complex like Borouge's have?

Typically flammable gas and liquid hydrocarbons in the cracker and reactor areas, plus combustible polymer powder and dust in handling, silo and bagging areas. Classification is set by the operator, so ask for gas group, temperature class and dust-zone drawings before specifying devices.

Will the Borouge 3 expansion affect contractors?

It adds new polyethylene, polypropylene and LDPE units, so construction and commissioning crews join the operating plant. Typically that means more contractor induction, tighter permit control and temporary classified areas; check requirements with the project's main contractor.

Does heat and salt air at Ruwais affect a handheld device?

Ruwais has a hot, humid Gulf coast climate, so outdoor equipment should cope with heat and salt air. The IS-04Z1 is designed to IP68 with a 4,000 mAh battery, but no hot-weather runtime has been published. Ask for the datasheet and check operating limits with Borouge.
