ATEX and IECEx Smartphone Distributor in Nigeria

A Zone 1 / Zone 21 smartphone for crews on Niger Delta flow stations, deepwater FPSOs, export terminals and the refining complexes at Lekki and Eleme. The Niger Delta extends over about 70,000 square kilometres, around 7.5 per cent of Nigeria's land area, between the Bight of Benin and the Bight of Bonny. An ATEX and IECEx smartphone distributor in Nigeria would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.

More about Nigeria that matters for portable equipment

Nigeria: industry on the ground

Nigeria LNG's plant on Bonny Island began production in 1999 and now has six liquefaction trains with a combined capacity of 22 million tonnes a year of LNG, alongside natural gas liquids for export.

Nigeria: industry on the ground

The Dangote Refinery at Lekki, Lagos was commissioned in May 2023, began operations in January 2024 and has a stated capacity of 700,000 barrels a day.

Nigeria: industry on the ground

The Delta states of Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers form the historic core of the region, which is petroleum-rich and has been the centre of international attention for its oil industry.

Nigeria: rules and approvals

NCC type approval standards are based on international work from IEC and CISPR, CENELEC and ETSI, and the commission publishes lists of approved handsets and approved equipment.

The term · ATEX and IECEx

What “ATEX and IECEx” means for a smartphone

ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.

For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.

In Nigeria. A Nigerian reviewer at an operator or in a joint venture would expect an IECEx Certificate of Conformity, because IECEx certificates are recognised by operators and regulators across West Africa, and ATEX evidence beside it helps. International companies working here specify to the standards they apply globally. Both programmes are in progress and nothing is yet issued.

Distributing the IS-04Z1 in Nigeria

SAMS is appointing authorised distributors ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No territory has been granted for Nigeria yet and applications are reviewed company by company. Because a certified Ex device cannot be opened by an ordinary phone workshop without invalidating its certificate, SAMS looks for partners who can provide competent technical support and after-sales service locally.

What SAMS looks for in a partner

Operator relationships
Existing supplier registrations or a clear route to them with the main operators and contractors in Nigeria.
Ex-competent staff
People who understand zone classification, markings and the conditions of a certificate.

And equally important

Local-language support
Documentation, training and helpdesk in the languages the workforce uses.
Service capability
Spares, battery replacement and repair routed through SAMS-approved channels.
Questions · Nigeria

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an ATEX and IECEx smartphone in Nigeria today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.

What does an ATEX and IECEx smartphone in Nigeria cost?

SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.

Is the IS-04Z1 ATEX and IECEx certified?

Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.

Which sites in Nigeria does this cover?

The market guide for Nigeria covers Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Warri and Escravos, Bonny Island, Lekki Free Zone, Lagos, among others. Site-level pages are linked below.

How do I become a SAMS distributor for Nigeria?

Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Nigeria.

What conditions should be assumed for devices in the Niger Delta?

The Delta is typically a low-lying, hot and humid region with heavy seasonal rain, so corrosion and moisture are common concerns. Check ingress protection, corrosion resistance and the operating temperature range, and ask the operator about site transport, such as boat or helicopter, and device rules.

Does the Dangote refinery set its own rules for contractors?

A large new refinery is operated by its owner, which applies its own site HSE, permit and equipment requirements alongside Nigerian law. Contractors should ask the operator for its induction, permit-to-work and approved-equipment procedures rather than assuming the practices of other Nigerian sites.

What approvals will a Nigerian buyer need?

The programme lists IECEx for hazardous area use and SONCAP and NCC steps for national conformity and the radio, all in progress. Nothing is yet issued. Ask your supplier and the site operator which documents your procurement and HSE teams will require before purchase.
