Corporate base
Petrobras' headquarters is in downtown Rio, which concentrates decision-making and many service companies.
Rio de Janeiro is the headquarters city of Petrobras and a base for Brazil's offshore oil industry. Hazardous-area work in the surrounding state is at refineries, terminals and shipyards in neighbouring municipalities such as Duque de Caxias, Angra dos Reis, Itaborai and Niteroi. This page explains what to look for in an ATEX and IECEx mobile phone for Rio de Janeiro, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Rio de Janeiro: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Rio de Janeiro. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The companies on site and the hazardous-area types a handset is likely to meet there.
Petrobras' headquarters is in downtown Rio, which concentrates decision-making and many service companies.
Reduc lies about 17 km from downtown, and Guanabara Bay hosts shipyards such as Brasa at Niteroi.
The Port of Rio de Janeiro is the third-busiest in Brazil, with a 6.7 km pier, 31 berths and drafts of 10 to 15 metres, and it handles petrochemicals among its cargoes, with road and rail access.
Rio has the second-largest municipal GDP in Brazil and is home to the headquarters of major oil, mining and telecommunications companies, including Petrobras and Vale, concentrating decision-makers in one city.
Petrobras has its headquarters in downtown Rio de Janeiro, which is why many supplier registrations, tender offices and engineering teams for the whole Brazilian oil sector are in the city.
Petrobras' refining plan includes the Boaventura Energy Complex in Rio de Janeiro state and a revamp of the Duque de Caxias refinery, so project activity remains close to the city.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Rio de Janeiro. Rio is the headquarters city of Petrobras, so reviewers here may be corporate engineering and HSE teams who set evidence expectations for refineries, terminals and yards elsewhere in the state. A dual ATEX and IECEx route is designed to help international groups. The IS-04Z1 has no certificate yet.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.
Likely candidates are refinery process units (duque de caxias), shipyards and fpso yards, tank terminals, offshore support bases. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Rio's coastal setting is warm and humid, so spare devices are best kept in dry cases with desiccant and checked for condensation before use. Confirm storage guidance in the warehouse or base procedures.
Mostly in the port, fuel terminals and refining sites around Guanabara Bay rather than in the central city. Check the exact location with the project, because zones are set by each facility's classification study.
Reduc at Duque de Caxias, about 17 km from downtown, Guanabara Bay shipyards such as Brasa at Niteroi, Angra dos Reis and Itaborai. Each has its own classification and rules. Confirm approvals and documentation requirements with the site operator.
