Canada: rules and approvals
Canada also accepts field certification for custom-made or low-volume equipment, evaluated at the installation site, which is similar to unit verification under the IECEx and ATEX systems.
The IS-04Z1 is an Ex phone for people working inside classified areas at Canadian oil sands plants, gas plants, refineries and offshore platforms. Radio and wireless devices sold in Canada need ISED certification against the Radio Standards Specifications, such as RSS-247 for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and RSS-Gen for general requirements and labelling. Distribution partners for Canada are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Canada has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Canada. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Hazardous locations in Canada fall under Section 18 of the Canadian Electrical Code Part I, which uses the Zone system, while the older Class and Division rules are kept in Annex J for existing installations.
The Athabasca oil sands in Alberta hold bitumen so viscous that it will not flow unless heated or diluted with lighter hydrocarbons such as condensate, so diluent and heating systems feature heavily at sites.
Electrical products for hazardous locations must be certified by a body accredited by the Standards Council of Canada, and IECEx or ATEX certificates are not accepted in place of that certification.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Canada. A Canadian reviewer expects a mark from a body accredited by the Standards Council of Canada under CSA C22.1, with the ambient range printed on it. IECEx and ATEX evidence supports international operators and contractors such as Fluor, Worley and the LNG Canada projects, but does not replace the Canadian route. All certification is in progress.
SAMS is appointing authorised distributors ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No territory has been granted for Canada yet and applications are reviewed company by company. Because a certified Ex device cannot be opened by an ordinary phone workshop without invalidating its certificate, SAMS looks for partners who can provide competent technical support and after-sales service locally.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.
The market guide for Canada covers Athabasca oil sands, Cold Lake and the Lakeland, Alberta Industrial Heartland, Montney and Duvernay, among others. Site-level pages are linked below.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Canada.
Hazardous-location electrical equipment in Canada is generally expected to carry certification from a Standards Council of Canada accredited body, and IECEx or ATEX certificates are not accepted as a substitute, although they can speed the evaluation. Confirm the required marking with the site operator and a Canadian certification body.
Fort McMurray averages about minus 17 degrees Celsius in January and has seen extremes below minus 50, so check the datasheet's operating and charging temperature range, battery behaviour in cold, and glove-friendly controls. Confirm any site cold-weather procedures with the operator before deployment.
Every battery gives up capacity in the cold, and the 4,000 mAh cell is sized for a normal shift, not extreme cold. Unless a certificate says otherwise, hazardous area equipment is assessed for minus 20 to plus 40 degrees Celsius, and the marked range will be published when the certificate issues. Check it first.
