Oman: geography and layout
Duqm, about 550 km from Muscat, hosts a Special Economic Zone with a refinery on 900 hectares and a port, and Duqm Airport opened in 2014.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, aimed at the field operators, technicians, inspection engineers and HSE teams who work inside Oman’s classified areas. Oman's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority type approval is valid for four years, previously it had no expiry, and a local representative and compliance mark are required. An ATEX and IECEx cell phone distributor in Oman would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.

Duqm, about 550 km from Muscat, hosts a Special Economic Zone with a refinery on 900 hectares and a port, and Duqm Airport opened in 2014.
Petroleum Development Oman delivers most of the country's crude and gas, owned 60 percent by the government, 34 percent by Shell, 4 percent by TotalEnergies and 2 percent by Partex.
Muscat has a hot arid climate with about 10 centimetres of rain a year, falling mostly from December to April, so heat rather than rain is the main stress.
In February 2026 the TRA launched a Self-Declaration of Conformity service for importers, so the approval route for some products is changing.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Oman. An Omani HSE or procurement reviewer at Petroleum Development Oman, OQ or OQ8 would expect certificate evidence with the temperature class clearly stated. ATEX and IECEx routes, both in progress, help international operators such as Occidental Oman and EPC contractors who bring their own standards. Nothing is yet issued, and the evidence should be requested in writing.
SAMS is appointing authorised distributors ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No territory has been granted for Oman yet and applications are reviewed company by company. Because a certified Ex device cannot be opened by an ordinary phone workshop without invalidating its certificate, SAMS looks for partners who can provide competent technical support and after-sales service locally.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.

From June to September the monsoon leaves Salalah in persistent damp and fog, and Sohar and Sur are humid and salt laden all year. A rugged build and IP68 sealing are aimed at that, but IP68 is not explosion protection. Check the certified ambient range once published.
