The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe Android handset designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, built for Hungarian refinery units, polymer plants, pharmaceutical solvent areas and gas installations. Four operating reactors built between 1982 and 1987 form the Paks Nuclear Power Plant, and nuclear is the main domestic energy source, with almost half of Hungary's energy imported as of 2024. Distribution partners for Hungary are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.

More about Hungary that matters for portable equipment

Hungary: infrastructure

The Arad-Szeged natural gas pipeline connects Romania and Hungary, so border compressor and metering stations belong to the national gas network.

Hungary: industry on the ground

Wanhua-BorsodChem, based at Kazincbarcika in north-east Hungary, produces isocyanates (MDI and TDI), PVC and chlor-alkali products, and is a major chemical employer for plant maintenance and shutdown contractors.

Hungary: background

MOL was established on 1 October 1991 as the legal successor of nine members of the National Oil and Gas Trust, which dated from 1957, giving Hungary a long industrial oil and gas history.

Hungary: who works there

MOL is active in exploration and production, refining, distribution, petrochemicals, power generation, trading and retail, with operations in over 30 countries and 2,400 service stations in ten countries as of 2025.

The term · ATEX and IECEx

What “ATEX and IECEx” means for a smartphone

ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.

For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.

In Hungary. A Hungarian reviewer at MOL, Tiszaújváros or a pharmaceutical plant would expect ATEX evidence consistent with the EU directive and the national decree that implements it. IECEx papers help international EPCs and contractors working across several countries. A dual route lets one pack serve both audiences. Certification is in progress; no certificate has been issued.

The route · distribution

Distributing the IS-04Z1 in Hungary

Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Hungary. Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.

What SAMS looks for in a partner

Operator relationships
Existing supplier registrations or a clear route to them with the main operators and contractors in Hungary.
Ex-competent staff
People who understand zone classification, markings and the conditions of a certificate.

And equally important

Local-language support
Documentation, training and helpdesk in the languages the workforce uses.
Service capability
Spares, battery replacement and repair routed through SAMS-approved channels.
Questions · Hungary

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an ATEX and IECEx cell phone in Hungary today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.

What does an ATEX and IECEx cell phone in Hungary cost?

SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.

Is the IS-04Z1 ATEX and IECEx certified?

Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.

Which sites in Hungary does this cover?

The market guide for Hungary covers Százhalombatta, Tiszaújváros, Kazincbarcika, Dorog, among others. Site-level pages are linked below.

How do I become a SAMS distributor for Hungary?

Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Hungary.

What documentation language is needed for Hungarian sites?

Hungarian is the working language, and ATEX instructions are typically expected in the language of the destination country. Providing Hungarian instructions with the certificate pack often helps, though international operators may also accept English. Check with the site safety office.

Does Hungary require ATEX for handheld devices in hazardous areas?

Hungary is an EU member, so ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU applies to equipment and Directive 1999/92/EC to workplace zoning. Zone 1 and Zone 2 devices should carry CE and Ex markings with instructions in the local language. Operators usually add their own permit and registration rules.

Is ATEX the evidence a Hungarian operator will ask for?

ATEX is the usual reference in the EU, and Hungary applies it through national law. Some operators or international contractors also ask for IECEx. Ask the operator's HSE or explosion-protection lead which evidence they accept before ordering.
