Explosion proof mobile phone for EnQuest in the UK

EnQuest operates the Magnus field east of Shetland and the Sullom Voe Terminal on the Shetland mainland, and the terminal is where a UK explosion proof mobile phone has to cope with a very large tank farm, jetties and a working fire brigade on an island site. This page is for EnQuest’s HSE, operations and telecoms teams and for the contractors who work at Sullom Voe and Magnus, and it covers what a Zone 1 handset needs to do there. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, with certification in progress ahead of Q4 2026. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone for Sullom Voe and Magnus: what is classified

Sullom Voe was built between 1975 and 1981 on roughly a thousand acres at the northern end of Shetland’s mainland. It is one of the largest oil terminals in Europe, receiving production from East of Shetland through the Brent and Ninian pipelines and from West of Shetland through the Clair pipeline, with around a dozen companies holding interests in it. EnQuest took over as operator in late 2017 and added the Magnus field and a larger terminal stake when it bought them from BP in 2018. Because of its position the terminal runs its own fire brigade, and gas arriving at Sullom Voe is sent on to Magnus to support enhanced oil recovery. EnQuest’s 2025 results describe projects to connect the terminal to the UK grid and to build new stabilisation facilities, intended to cut terminal emissions by about 90 per cent, so a construction and commissioning workforce is working alongside a live plant. That mix, in a place where the nearest town is a ferry or flight away, is the context for a handset decision.

EnQuest’s sites

Sullom Voe Terminal
Crude stabilisation, storage and export jetties on the north Shetland mainland.
Magnus
North Sea platform east of Shetland; six-well infill drilling was planned from the second quarter of 2026.
Kraken
Floating production unit east of Shetland; EnQuest reported 95 per cent FPSO efficiency in 2025.
Thistle and Heather
Decommissioning scopes; the 15,300-tonne Heather topsides were removed in August 2025.

Classified areas at the terminal

Crude storage tanks
Large storage tanks, with vapour expected around roof seals and vents.
Stabilisation and gas handling
Process trains where light ends are separated from crude.
Jetty and loading arms
Tanker berths with vapour release during loading and ballast operations.
Pump and manifold areas
Open pump bays and valve manifolds across the tank farm.
Control rooms and offices
Safe-area buildings, where handsets are issued and kept.
Built for local conditions

What an exposed Shetland site does to a handset

Shetland’s weather and the size of the terminal account for most of what a device has to survive. The points below are the ones a terminal reviewer raises first.

Wind and driven rain on open pipe racks

A terminal this size is mostly outdoors, and a handset is carried through horizontal rain and salt air for much of the year. IP68 sealing and rugged build are the specifications that decide whether it is still working in January.

A thousand acres between safe areas

A round at a tank farm is a long walk, and a charging point inside the boundary is rare. The 4,000 mAh battery is sized for a full shift with the camera and GNSS in use, so charging happens at handover in the control building.

Vapour near tank roofs and jetties

Tank roofs, vents and loading arms are the places where hydrocarbon vapour is expected in normal operation, which is a Zone 1 question. The IS-04Z1 is designed to an II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 target, and the temperature class is the figure an instrument engineer checks against the products stored.

Position and photographs for a large site

Four-constellation GNSS lets an operator log a leak, a corroded support or a valve position as a coordinate, and the 50 MP camera attaches an image the planner can act on, which saves a second walk to the same tank.

A mixed workforce on one estate

Terminal staff, offshore crews and decommissioning contractors can be enrolled through one Android Enterprise policy, with the camera or applications restricted as the site requires and units wiped at the end of a campaign.

Use cases · EnQuest

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work for EnQuest.

Terminal01

Tank farm and jetty rounds

An operator walking the tank farm records levels and a photograph of any seal or vent defect, and a jetty team has a handset that connects to the control room during a tanker loading. Both fit the same device.

Offshore02

Magnus platform campaigns

A drilling and well intervention programme brings contractor crews to Magnus for a set period. A handset issued and enrolled on arrival can carry the permit, the daily report and a camera for evidence, and be wiped when the crew leaves.

Projects03

Terminal modernisation and construction

The grid connection and new stabilisation facilities involve construction contractors working near live plant. A handset limited by policy to the approved applications suits a gang that changes every few weeks.

Questions · EnQuest

Frequently asked questions

Who else is on the Sullom Voe estate besides EnQuest?

EnQuest operates the terminal, but around a dozen companies hold interests in it, and field operators such as those on the Clair pipeline deliver into it. A visiting contractor may therefore be working for a different company under the terminal operator’s site rules. The Clair field that delivers through the West of Shetland pipeline is covered under the explosion proof phone for Adura page.

What does EnQuest need to see before a handset is allowed on site?

We have not verified a published supplier programme for EnQuest, so we will not name one. Ask the terminal’s procurement, HSE and telecoms teams what they require for a handheld in a classified area, including certification evidence and any site approval step.

How does remote Shetland logistics affect a handset order?

Spares and service are harder to reach on an island than on the mainland, so ask any supplier where units and replacement parts are held. A device that can be enrolled and re-issued locally reduces the number of shipments that depend on the ferry or the flight.

Does EnQuest use the IS-04Z1 today?

No. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, certification is in progress, and SAMS has no pilot, order or relationship with EnQuest. This page describes what a terminal team would ask for and what the device is designed for.
