Explosion proof mobile phone for Adura in the UK

Adura is the Aberdeen-headquartered company that Shell and Equinor formed on 1 December 2025 by combining their UK North Sea interests, and it now sits behind most of the installations a UK explosion proof mobile phone buyer will be asked about in the central and northern North Sea. This page is for the HSE, telecoms and procurement staff who decide what may be carried into a Zone 1 area on those installations, and for the contractors who work to their rules. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, with certification in progress ahead of Q4 2026. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone is carried on Adura installations

Adura took over Equinor and Shell’s interests in twelve producing assets and projects in execution: Mariner, Rosebank, Buzzard, Shearwater, Penguins, Gannet, Nelson, Pierce, Jackdaw, Victory, Clair and Schiehallion. It is a new company with about 1,200 people, so the layers a supplier would normally rely on, an approved-equipment list, a site induction, a telecoms standard, are being rebuilt or inherited asset by asset, and nobody outside the company should assume which. Operatorship also differs from field to field. Press coverage of the formation puts Shearwater under a Shell-held operating stake, while BP operates Clair and CNOOC operates Buzzard, so a contractor on those two may be working to a different duty holder’s rules than Adura’s own. Mariner is the clearest single case: an ultra-heavy oil field about 150 km east of Shetland, produced from the Mariner A platform and exported through the Mariner B floating storage unit.

Assets in the portfolio

Mariner
Heavy oil east of Shetland; wells drilled from the Mariner A platform, storage and offloading at Mariner B.
Shearwater
Central North Sea platform; press reports give Shell a 55.5 per cent operating stake.
Gannet, Nelson, Pierce, Penguins
Fields where press reports describe operating stakes passing to Adura.
Clair
West of Shetland; BP-operated, with oil reaching Sullom Voe through the Clair pipeline.
Rosebank and Jackdaw
Listed by Equinor among the projects in execution; not production sites today.

Classified areas offshore

Wellhead and drilling areas
Gas and oil at pressure; classified in the open on the deck.
Process modules
Separation, compression and produced water treatment, naturally ventilated or enclosed.
Diluent and chemical stores
Flammable liquid vapour where heavy oil is thinned for export.
Offloading and storage
Storage unit tanks, vents and the hose connection to the shuttle tanker.
Accommodation and helideck
Outside the classified boundary; the handover point for charging and issue.
Built for local conditions

What a North Sea platform does to a handset

Five conditions come up whenever an offshore HSE or telecoms engineer reviews a handset, and each maps to something the IS-04Z1 is designed to answer.

Diluted heavy oil is a vapour question, not just a crude one

Mariner’s oil is piped after dilution, so the hydrocarbon vapour on deck comes from the diluent as well as the crude. The IS-04Z1 is designed to an II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 target, a Zone 1 gas marking at the broadest gas group, so the reviewer is not left checking the handset against each stream separately.

Salt, rain and wash-down

A platform deck is hosed down and rained on far more often than it is dusty. IP68 sealing and rugged build are the first things a deck-level reviewer reads on the datasheet, ahead of any software feature.

A shift that ends at the accommodation block

There is no charging point in the process area, so the 4,000 mAh cell is sized to carry a full twelve-hour shift with the camera and GNSS in use, with charging at handover rather than at the walkway.

Evidence for permit and inspection records

The 50 MP camera with PDAF gives photographs a planner onshore can read, such as a flange tag, a corrosion patch or a relief valve label, which is what avoids a second trip into the zone for the same question.

One estate, many contractors

Android 16 with Android Enterprise and the major MDM consoles lets Adura IT enrol its own units and restrict the camera or applications by policy, while contractors’ units can be handled the same way instead of as an exception.

Use cases · Adura

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work on these assets.

Wells01

Drilling and well intervention on Mariner A

Equinor’s reporting for 2025 records new production and water injection wells drilled from the Mariner A platform. A drilling crew inside a classified area works to a permit and a daily report, and an enrolled handset can carry both without a trip to the office.

Operations02

Offloading from the Mariner B storage unit

A shuttle tanker offload is a watched operation with set communications. A Zone 1 handset on the deck gives the loading master a photograph, a position and a call to the control room from the same device.

Maintenance03

Shutdown and campaign work across the central North Sea

Shearwater, Gannet, Nelson and Pierce are worked by campaign crews who fly out, finish a scope and leave. A handset they are issued on arrival and wiped on departure suits that pattern better than one that stays with a person.

Questions · Adura

Frequently asked questions

Does Adura require its own equipment approval beyond the certificate?

Large North Sea duty holders normally layer a vendor or equipment approval on top of the certificate, but Adura is a new company and we will not guess at its process. Ask its procurement and HSE teams what they require for a handheld device, and whether legacy Shell or Equinor approvals carry across.

Does Adura operate every asset on this page?

Not necessarily. Equinor’s announcement lists the assets as Adura’s portfolio, but press coverage places operatorship of Clair with BP and Buzzard with CNOOC. The duty holder for a given installation sets its device rules, so check who it is before a contractor’s kit is specified.

Is a UK offshore rotation a problem for a shared handset?

Offshore rotations vary, with two-on-two-off and three-on-three-off patterns both in use across the North Sea. A device that is enrolled in an MDM can be issued, reassigned and wiped at crew change, which is the practical answer to shared units.

Does this page mean Adura has chosen the IS-04Z1?

No. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, certification is in progress, and SAMS has no supply agreement, pilot or relationship with Adura. The page describes what an Adura team would ask for and what the device is designed for.
