Hot, wet climate
The climate is tropical monsoon with temperatures often above 40 C and a record flood in 2007, so low-lying sites need weather planning.
Villahermosa, capital of Tabasco, has become a hub for oil and gas operations in southern Mexico, alongside its agricultural base of cacao, sugarcane, bananas and rice. Fields such as Ogarrio lie nearby and the Olmeca refinery at Dos Bocas is in the state, so many hazardous-area workers are based here. This page explains what to look for in a rugged smartphone for Villahermosa, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Villahermosa: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Villahermosa. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

The climate is tropical monsoon with temperatures often above 40 C and a record flood in 2007, so low-lying sites need weather planning.
Offices, warehouses and service firms concentrate in the city, with fields and plants spread across the surrounding lowlands.
Villahermosa has several lagoons, the largest being La Laguna de las Ilusiones, so water and wetlands influence site layout and access across the surrounding lowlands.
The city is about 50 km south of the Gulf coast and 904 km southeast of Mexico City, between the Grijalva and Carrizal rivers, at an average elevation of about 10 m above sea level.
Villahermosa's airport was inaugurated on 2 May 1979, has a single 2,200 m runway and has offered flights to Houston and Panama City aimed largely at the oil industry.
The climate is tropical monsoon, with spring and summer temperatures reaching above 40 C, and a short humid winter with daytime highs around 28 C, which stresses batteries and enclosures.
A rugged phone is built to survive water, dust, drops and rough handling, usually rated by an IP code and a drop specification. Ruggedness is an environmental property: it says nothing about whether a phone may be used where flammable gas or dust is present. That is decided by explosion-protection certification and marking.
The IS-04Z1 combines both: an IP68 sealed rugged build and a design for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4). The explosion-protection certificates are in progress and none has been issued.
In Villahermosa. The climate is tropical monsoon, with temperatures often above 40 C and a record flood in 2007, so low-lying sites need weather planning. IP68 is designed to resist dust and immersion in water, which helps in wet conditions, but it is not explosion protection. Check temperature class and ambient range separately.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
It is designed to IP68 sealing, with glove-friendly controls. Ruggedness is not explosion protection: that depends on the certificates, which are in progress.
Likely candidates are oil and gas production facilities, refinery process units (olmeca, dos bocas), pipeline and storage facilities. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
It is described as a hub for southern Mexico's oil and gas operations, with offices, service firms and field facilities across Tabasco. Confirm the specific facility and operator, since classified areas are defined site by site.
Spring and summer temperatures can exceed 40 C with high humidity, so devices need good thermal margins and a suitable temperature class. Confirm operator guidance on outdoor equipment and keep devices out of direct sun.
Low-lying sites need weather planning, given a record flood in 2007 and a hot, wet climate. IP68 is designed to withstand water immersion and dust, but it is not explosion protection. Check the certified ambient range and store devices dry between shifts.
