Villahermosa is the capital of Tabasco and is known as the energy city of Mexico because of its role in southern oil and gas. Villahermosa's airport was inaugurated on 2 May 1979, has a single 2,200 m runway and has offered flights to Houston and Panama City aimed largely at the oil industry. This page explains what to look for in a hazardous area mobile phone for Villahermosa, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Villahermosa: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

The Olmeca refinery at Dos Bocas, Paraiso, marked two years of operation in August 2026, with capital spending budgeted for 2026.
The climate is tropical monsoon with temperatures often above 40 C and a record flood in 2007, so low-lying sites need weather planning.
Tabasco is largely low-lying floodplain, wetland and tropical rainforest, with about 199 km of coastline and roughly 29,800 hectares of estuaries and lakes, so wet ground is common around the city.
Main city roads include Paseo Tabasco, Gregorio Mendez Avenue, the Periferico, Ruiz Cortines Avenue and Pino Suarez Avenue, which matter for moving equipment between sites.
Villahermosa has several lagoons, the largest being La Laguna de las Ilusiones, so water and wetlands influence site layout and access across the surrounding lowlands.
The city is about 50 km south of the Gulf coast and 904 km southeast of Mexico City, between the Grijalva and Carrizal rivers, at an average elevation of about 10 m above sea level.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Villahermosa. Classified areas for Villahermosa-based crews include oil and gas production facilities, refinery process units at Olmeca in Dos Bocas, and pipeline and storage facilities. Pemex or its contractors classify them, not SAMS. Offices and warehouses in the city are generally non-hazardous, so check the area before bringing any device in.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.
Likely candidates are oil and gas production facilities, refinery process units (olmeca, dos bocas), pipeline and storage facilities. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
It is described as a hub for southern Mexico's oil and gas operations, with offices, service firms and field facilities across Tabasco. Confirm the specific facility and operator, since classified areas are defined site by site.
Spring and summer temperatures can exceed 40 C with high humidity, so devices need good thermal margins and a suitable temperature class. Confirm operator guidance on outdoor equipment and keep devices out of direct sun.
Low-lying sites need weather planning, given a record flood in 2007 and a hot, wet climate. IP68 is designed to withstand water immersion and dust, but it is not explosion protection. Check the certified ambient range and store devices dry between shifts.
