Company-town setting
The town grew around the oil companies, so operator staff, contractors and service firms are concentrated in a small area.
Al Ahmadi is a town in southern Kuwait founded in 1946 after the discovery of oil, and it is the headquarters of Kuwait Oil Company and Kuwait National Petroleum Company. The Greater Burgan field and the Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery, with a stated capacity of 346,000 barrels a day, are close by. A rugged mobile phone distributor in Al Ahmadi would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Al Ahmadi has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Al Ahmadi. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
The town grew around the oil companies, so operator staff, contractors and service firms are concentrated in a small area.
The Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery covers about 10.5 square km along the shore and has been upgraded across 39 units.
Burgan's subsurface reservoirs were discovered in February 1938, and Kuwait Oil Company began commercial oil production there in 1946.
Summer daily highs average 42 to 46 degrees Celsius, so outdoor refinery and wellsite work faces strong heat for much of the year.
CITRA type approval for telecom equipment lasts three years and needs no local representative, while the Public Authority for Industry handles product safety registration.
Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery was first built in 1949, sits about 40 km south of Kuwait City and covers about 10.5 square kilometres.
A rugged phone is built to survive water, dust, drops and rough handling, usually rated by an IP code and a drop specification. Ruggedness is an environmental property: it says nothing about whether a phone may be used where flammable gas or dust is present. That is decided by explosion-protection certification and marking.
The IS-04Z1 combines both: an IP68 sealed rugged build and a design for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4). The explosion-protection certificates are in progress and none has been issued.
In Al Ahmadi. The setting is coastal desert, with very hot summers, dust and humidity all affecting outdoor equipment. IP68 is designed to withstand dust and water immersion, which helps with fine dust and coastal moisture, but it does not equal explosion protection. Temperature class and permitted ambient range remain separate checks.
Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Al Ahmadi. Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
It is designed to IP68 sealing, with glove-friendly controls. Ruggedness is not explosion protection: that depends on the certificates, which are in progress.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, oil gathering and processing, crude and product storage, marine loading facilities. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Al Ahmadi.
Kuwait Oil Company for field work and KNPC, now merging with KIPIC, for refinery work. Both run their own procurement and HSE approval processes, so ask each for the current procedure.
Summer highs average 42 to 46 degrees Celsius with a national record of 54, so use devices rated for high ambient temperatures and avoid leaving them in vehicles.
KOC and KNPC each run their own supplier registration and prequalification, KOC through its E-Business portal and KNPC through its eSourcing portal. A device supplier normally needs to be registered before it is considered. Confirm current requirements with the operator.
