Egypt: rules and approvals
The National Telecom Regulatory Authority must approve any equipment that uses radio frequencies or connects to public networks, including mobile phones, before it can be imported or sold in Egypt.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe handset for people who cross into classified areas in Egypt every shift: Gulf of Suez platform crews, LNG terminal operators, refinery engineers and the HSE and telecoms teams who equip them. This page sets out how an intrinsically safe smartphone supply route to Egypt will work for the IS-04Z1, and what is and is not available before launch.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. An intrinsically safe smartphone for Egypt cannot be bought yet: the SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued), and the datasheet, certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Egypt. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The classified areas, operators and sites below are the ones covered in the SAMS Egypt market guide.
The National Telecom Regulatory Authority must approve any equipment that uses radio frequencies or connects to public networks, including mobile phones, before it can be imported or sold in Egypt.
Egypt has set a target of 42 per cent renewable electricity by 2030 and is building nuclear capacity at El Dabaa, so new classified-area work will include non-fossil projects too.
Apache, using assets acquired from BP in 2010, is the major operator in the Western Desert, often through joint ventures with EGPC such as Khalda Petroleum and Qarun Petroleum.
Egypt's LNG plants at Damietta and Idku are operated by Egyptian LNG and SEGAS LNG, and gas supplied 84 per cent of Egypt's electricity in 2023.
Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.
The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.
In Egypt. Gulf of Suez platforms are a boat transfer from shore, and a failed handset is not a same-shift replacement. An intrinsically safe handheld is designed for those offshore and remote rounds, with a rugged build and a 4,000 mAh battery specified for a shift, so inspections can continue far from the supply base.
There is no stock to order for Egypt yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, certification is in progress, and supply will run through authorised distributors after the certificates are issued. Procurement teams can prepare now with the datasheet, the certification schedule and a safe-area evaluation.

Which certificates are in progress, in what order, and what is still to be confirmed.
Evaluation units can be used for connectivity, MDM enrolment and workflow testing outside classified areas.

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.

Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.
Western Desert and Gulf of Suez sites typically combine high summer heat, dust and wind-blown sand, with salt air on the coast. Check the operating temperature range, dust ingress rating and enclosure corrosion resistance, and confirm any site limits with the operator or contractor.
Yes. NTRA covers radio and telecom approval, while the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality and the General Organization for Export and Import Control cover electrical safety and general product conformity. A device with batteries or chargers may need to satisfy both, so check each body's scope.
No: EGPC and its operating affiliates, along with international operators like Eni, each run vendor-registration and engineering-approval processes, so conformity alone does not guarantee listing. EOS and NTRA approvals are being pursued and are not finished. Confirm the route with the operator's procurement team.
