Tengizchevroil: background
The joint venture was formed in April 1993, when the Kazakh government granted it exclusive 40-year development rights, so it is a long-established operation with mature site procedures.
Tengizchevroil is a joint venture developing the Tengiz and Korolevskoye fields in the Atyrau region of Kazakhstan. The company is reported to employ about 4,000 people, around 95% of them residents of Kazakhstan, which makes local-language training and instructions important for any new equipment. Buyers searching for an intrinsically safe smartphone supplier for Tengizchevroil can take the datasheet and the certification schedule for the IS-04Z1 now; supply follows certification.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. An intrinsically safe smartphone for Tengizchevroil cannot be bought yet: the SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued), and the datasheet, certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Kazakhstan. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of its operations and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
TCO's procurement favours qualified Kazakhstani contractors (over 1,250 contracts awarded to local firms on the Future Growth Project); confirm current supplier requirements with TCO. The Ex certificate and an organisation's own vendor or engineering approval are two separate timelines; SAMS is working towards both and holds neither today.
The joint venture was formed in April 1993, when the Kazakh government granted it exclusive 40-year development rights, so it is a long-established operation with mature site procedures.
Because the venture is operated for international partners, supplier access normally runs through its own approved-contractor and HSE induction process rather than a general national register; confirm current rules with its procurement team.
Chevron describes Tengiz as the world's deepest producing supergiant oil field, with the top of the reservoir roughly 13,000 feet, or about 4,000 metres, below ground.
Tengizchevroil holds the right to develop the Tengiz and Korolevskoye oil fields, which lie in the north-eastern part of the Caspian Sea basin in western Kazakhstan.
Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.
The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.
In Tengizchevroil. Operators at Tengiz and Korolevskoye move between wellsites, gathering facilities and plant units, often over distance. A handheld intrinsically safe phone lets them record readings, photograph equipment and raise work requests from inside the classified area. It would also help the large contractor workforce during plant start-up support and routine inspection rounds.
Supply of the IS-04Z1 to Tengizchevroil starts only after certification, through authorised distributors. Until then a buyer can request the datasheet and the written certification schedule, and arrange a safe-area evaluation unit, which puts the site on the list for the right local channel at launch.

Which certificates are in progress, in what order, and what is still to be confirmed.
Evaluation units can be used for connectivity, MDM enrolment and workflow testing outside classified areas.

Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.
TCO's procurement favours qualified Kazakhstani contractors (over 1,250 contracts awarded to local firms on the Future Growth Project); confirm current supplier requirements with TCO.
Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.
Continental climates around the north Caspian typically bring very cold winters and hot, dusty summers. For handheld devices this means checking operating temperature range, battery behaviour in cold, and ingress protection against dust. Confirm the site's temperature limits with the operator.
Tengiz is a large Caspian oil field, and sour hydrocarbon handling is common in such operations, so gas-detection and hazardous-area discipline matter. Whether specific areas are classified Zone 1 or Zone 2 is decided per installation, so confirm each work area's classification with the operator.
Its procurement is reported to favour qualified Kazakhstani contractors, with many contracts awarded to local firms on its Future Growth Project. A foreign manufacturer would normally work through local partners. Ask the company for current supplier requirements; the IS-04Z1 has no certificate yet and SAMS has appointed no distributor.
