Intrinsically Safe Smartphone Supplier for Pemex

Pemex is Mexico's state-owned oil company, founded in 1938, producing crude oil, natural gas, fuels and petrochemicals. The Dos Bocas refinery plant opened in 2024 and was reported to be operating at 60% of capacity, transforming about 340,000 barrels a day of crude into fuels, so new-build units are being commissioned. This page sets out how an intrinsically safe smartphone supply route to Pemex will work for the IS-04Z1, and what is and is not available before launch.

More about Pemex that matters for portable equipment

Pemex: projects and investment

In September 2021 Pemex and Braskem agreed a gas supply deal and a 400 million dollar ethane terminal at Laguna de Pajaritos in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, adding petrochemical handling in the south-east.

Pemex: background

Pemex was established by presidential decree on 7 June 1938, following the nationalisation of the oil industry that March, and has since been run as the Mexican state petroleum corporation.

Pemex: background

Small quantities of oil were first refined into kerosene around 1876 near Tampico, showing that the Gulf coast oil area has a very long industrial history and ageing plant in places.

Pemex: projects and investment

In July 2021 the energy secretariat appointed Pemex operator of the offshore Zama field, which would feed Pemex-run facilities, showing continued activity in Gulf of Mexico shallow waters.

The term · intrinsically safe

What “intrinsically safe” means for a smartphone

Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.

The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.

In Pemex. Operators on Bay of Campeche platforms and in refinery units walk long routes with many inspection points. A handheld intrinsically safe phone allows tag scanning, photographs and defect reports inside the classified area. It would suit routine rounds at Madero, Minatitlan and Tula and the crowded work periods of plant turnarounds.

Sourcing the IS-04Z1 for Pemex

There is no stock to order for Pemex yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, certification is in progress, and supply will run through authorised distributors after the certificates are issued. Procurement teams can prepare now with the datasheet, the certification schedule and a safe-area evaluation.

  1. 01

    Request the datasheet

The technical specification, marking target and conditions of use, sent by email.

  2. 02

    Ask for the certification schedule

Which certificates are in progress, in what order, and what is still to be confirmed.

  3. 03

    Evaluate in a safe area

Evaluation units can be used for connectivity, MDM enrolment and workflow testing outside classified areas.

Questions · Pemex

Frequently asked questions

Can Pemex buy the IS-04Z1 today?

Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.

What does an intrinsically safe smartphone for Pemex cost?

No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.

What does ‘intrinsically safe’ mean for the IS-04Z1?

The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.

How does Pemex approve suppliers?

Supplier registration and equipment approval are run by the organisation itself; confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams.

How will SAMS supply Pemex?

Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.

What language is needed for Pemex documentation and training?

Spanish is the working language, so manuals, safety instructions and training for any hazardous-area equipment are normally expected in Spanish. English may be accepted for engineering review, but ask Pemex's procurement and safety teams which language and format they require.

Is there a national certification route for equipment used on Pemex sites?

Mexico uses its own standards for electrical equipment in hazardous locations alongside recognised international certificates, and Pemex applies its own technical specifications as well. Confirm with Pemex procurement which certificates and local marks are accepted before offering handheld devices.

How do offshore conditions affect a handheld on a Campeche platform?

Salt spray, humidity and heat are constant on offshore decks. IP68 sealing helps against spray and rain but is not an explosion rating. Test the battery under local heat, and ask the platform's HSE team how handheld devices are controlled and where they may be charged.
