Pemex: projects and investment
In July 2021 the energy secretariat appointed Pemex operator of the offshore Zama field, which would feed Pemex-run facilities, showing continued activity in Gulf of Mexico shallow waters.
Pemex is Mexico's state-owned oil company, founded in 1938, producing crude oil, natural gas, fuels and petrochemicals. It owns six refineries (Cadereyta, Madero, Minatitlan, Salamanca, Salina Cruz and Tula) and the newer Dos Bocas refinery, and operates offshore fields such as Cantarell in the Bay of Campeche. Buyers searching for an IECEx mobile phone supplier for Pemex can take the datasheet and the certification schedule for the IS-04Z1 now; supply follows certification.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. An IECEx mobile phone for Pemex cannot be bought yet: the SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued), and the datasheet, certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Mexico. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Supplier registration and equipment approval are run by the organisation itself; confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams. The Ex certificate and an organisation's own vendor or engineering approval are two separate timelines; SAMS is working towards both and holds neither today.

A new Pemex unit was announced in 2021 to handle liquefied petroleum gas distribution, so LPG storage and delivery sites are also part of the group's hazardous-area footprint.
Published refinery listings show Pemex running refineries at Tula and Salina Cruz (320,000 barrels a day each), Cadereyta (292,000), Salamanca (236,000), Madero (190,000), Minatitlán (170,000) and the newer Dos Bocas (340,000).
Ku-Maloob-Zaap, discovered by Pemex in 1979 in the Bay of Campeche about 105 km from Ciudad del Carmen, was developed with 17 oil platforms and 42 pipelines and became Mexico's most productive oil field.
IECEx is the international scheme for certifying equipment used in explosive atmospheres. A certificate of conformity is issued by an accredited certification body against a specific edition of the IEC 60079 standards and carries a schedule of conditions of safe use. It is not a legal requirement in most countries on its own, but many national schemes accept it as the technical basis.
The IECEx certificate for the IS-04Z1 is in progress and has not been issued. The marking target is Ex ib IIC T4, the intrinsic safety concept for Zone 1 gas with the hardest gas group (IIC) and a 135 °C temperature class.
In Pemex. Pemex's refineries and offshore fields draw foreign engineering firms and technology providers who are used to IECEx documents. They look for a certificate of conformity and its schedule of conditions. IECEx is a target for the IS-04Z1 and remains in progress, so Pemex staff should treat it as a planned route and not a held approval.
There is no stock to order for Pemex yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, certification is in progress, and supply will run through authorised distributors after the certificates are issued. Procurement teams can prepare now with the datasheet, the certification schedule and a safe-area evaluation.

No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
No. The IECEx certificate is in progress and has not been issued. SAMS will publish the number when it exists.
Supplier registration and equipment approval are run by the organisation itself; confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams.
Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.
Spanish is the working language, so manuals, safety instructions and training for any hazardous-area equipment are normally expected in Spanish. English may be accepted for engineering review, but ask Pemex's procurement and safety teams which language and format they require.
Mexico uses its own standards for electrical equipment in hazardous locations alongside recognised international certificates, and Pemex applies its own technical specifications as well. Confirm with Pemex procurement which certificates and local marks are accepted before offering handheld devices.
Salt spray, humidity and heat are constant on offshore decks. IP68 sealing helps against spray and rain but is not an explosion rating. Test the battery under local heat, and ask the platform's HSE team how handheld devices are controlled and where they may be charged.
