Intrinsically Safe Smartphone Distributor in Mexico

The IS-04Z1 is an Ex mobile phone for people working inside classified areas at Mexican refineries, offshore platforms, petrochemical plants and fuel terminals. In 2025 the IFT was dissolved and replaced by the Agencia de Transformacion Digital y Telecomunicaciones, within which the Comision Reguladora de Telecomunicaciones now issues Certificates of Homologation. Distribution partners for Mexico are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.

More about Mexico that matters for portable equipment

Mexico: rules and approvals

NOM certificates of conformity, issued by bodies such as NYCE and ANCE, allow customs clearance into Mexico, and the Secretaria de Economia oversees NOM enforcement.

Mexico: industry on the ground

The offshore Cantarell field was discovered in 1976, started production in 1979 and peaked in 2004, so ageing offshore infrastructure is a feature of Mexican upstream work.

Mexico: rules and approvals

Telecom and wireless products follow the PEC conformity assessment procedure, which results in a Certificate of Homologation, so older IFT references in supplier paperwork may be out of date.

Mexico: rules and approvals

Applicants are described as needing in-country testing in Mexico or at a laboratory recognised under a mutual recognition agreement, plus a local representative or importer.

The term · intrinsically safe

What “intrinsically safe” means for a smartphone

Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.

The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.

In Mexico. Rounds on a Campeche platform, a Salina Cruz refinery unit or a Coatzacoalcos tank farm are short, repeated and often wet. An intrinsically safe handheld lets an inspector log readings and photograph a flange without hot-work style permits. Offshore rotations by helicopter or boat also favour a compact device that is not left on deck.

The route · distribution

Distributing the IS-04Z1 in Mexico

SAMS is appointing authorised distributors ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No territory has been granted for Mexico yet and applications are reviewed company by company. Because a certified Ex device cannot be opened by an ordinary phone workshop without invalidating its certificate, SAMS looks for partners who can provide competent technical support and after-sales service locally.

What SAMS looks for in a partner

Operator relationships
Existing supplier registrations or a clear route to them with the main operators and contractors in Mexico.
Ex-competent staff
People who understand zone classification, markings and the conditions of a certificate.

And equally important

Local-language support
Documentation, training and helpdesk in the languages the workforce uses.
Service capability
Spares, battery replacement and repair routed through SAMS-approved channels.
Questions · Mexico

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an intrinsically safe smartphone in Mexico today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.

What does an intrinsically safe smartphone in Mexico cost?

SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.

What does ‘intrinsically safe’ mean for the IS-04Z1?

The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.

Which sites in Mexico does this cover?

The market guide for Mexico covers Dos Bocas, Tabasco, Bay of Campeche, Ciudad del Carmen, Coatzacoalcos and Minatitlán, among others. Site-level pages are linked below.

How do I become a SAMS distributor for Mexico?

Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Mexico.

Do I need both homologation and NOM certification for a phone in Mexico?

Not always. Mexico has telecom homologation and NOM schemes, and which applies depends on the product. Radio products generally need homologation, while some electrical products also need NOM certificates for customs clearance. Confirm both requirements with a Mexican certification body before shipping.

Where does hazardous-area work concentrate in Mexico?

Typically Pemex offshore platforms in the Gulf of Mexico, onshore fields and gas processing plants, refineries such as Tula, and petrochemical complexes on the Gulf coast. Each operator issues its own classification, so request the area drawing and the gas group and temperature class before specifying equipment.

Do Mexican drawings in Clase I División 1 match a Zone 1 device?

They are different systems. Mexican practice follows the American code, so Clase and División is common, while the IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and has an NEC 500 route in progress. The mapping is a documentation matter, so confirm acceptance with the unidad de verificación and the plant.
