Petronas: background
The first oil well in Malaysia was drilled at Miri in Sarawak in 1910, known as the Grand Old Lady, which shows a long industrial history in north Borneo and ageing facilities in places.
PETRONAS is Malaysia's state-owned oil and gas company, integrated across exploration, production, refining, gas, LNG and petrochemicals. Petronas made its first crude shipment, 358,000 barrels to Japan, on 1 September 1975, and its lubricants subsidiary now operates in over 100 markets, indicating strong export and marine logistics. Buyers searching for an intrinsically safe mobile phone supplier for Petronas can take the datasheet and the certification schedule for the IS-04Z1 now; supply follows certification.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. An intrinsically safe mobile phone for Petronas cannot be bought yet: the SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued), and the datasheet, certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Malaysia. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of its operations and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Suppliers apply for a PETRONAS licence or registration through the PETRONAS Licensing Management System (PLMS), then trade through its procurement platforms such as the Unified Procurement Platform and B2B Marketplace. A licence covers upstream and downstream supply; a registration covers downstream subsidiaries only. The Ex certificate and an organisation's own vendor or engineering approval are two separate timelines; SAMS is working towards both and holds neither today.
The first oil well in Malaysia was drilled at Miri in Sarawak in 1910, known as the Grand Old Lady, which shows a long industrial history in north Borneo and ageing facilities in places.
Petronas Carigali, formed in 1978, is the principal exploration and production subsidiary, with Petronas Dagangan and Petronas Chemicals handling marketing and petrochemicals, so each business unit runs its own sites.
Petronas was established and incorporated on 17 August 1974 under the Petroleum Development Act, and is vested with all oil and gas resources in Malaysia, so it is the licensor as well as an operator.
In 1978 Petronas set up the Malaysia LNG joint venture with Mitsubishi and Shell, taking 65% equity, which led to the large LNG complex in Bintulu, Sarawak, with its cryogenic and gas hazards.
Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.
The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.
In Petronas. Operators on offshore platforms and at LNG liquefaction trains cover long, multi-level routes with checks at many points. A handheld intrinsically safe phone allows tag scanning, photographs and defect reports inside the classified area. It would support turnaround work at Melaka, Kertih and Pengerang, where large contractor crews work close to live process units.
There is no stock to order for Petronas yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, certification is in progress, and supply will run through authorised distributors after the certificates are issued. Procurement teams can prepare now with the datasheet, the certification schedule and a safe-area evaluation.

No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.

Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.
Sites are hot and humid year-round with heavy rain, often with salt air near the coast, which stresses seals, connectors and batteries. For handheld devices check ingress protection, corrosion resistance and thermal limits, and confirm each site's own environmental requirements.
Malaysian oil and gas operators commonly accept recognised international schemes such as IECEx and ATEX, in addition to local regulatory requirements, and Petronas applies its own technical specifications. Confirm with the operating unit which certificates and local approvals are required.
Heat, humidity and rain are constant, and offshore adds salt spray. IP68 sealing helps the housing cope but is not explosion protection. Check the datasheet temperature range, test battery behaviour under local heat, and ask each site's HSE team how portable devices are stored and charged.
