Intrinsically Safe Mobile Phone in Sharjah

Sharjah's hydrocarbon work is run by Sharjah National Oil Corporation (SNOC), whose midstream operations include the Sajaa gas processing plant, export and import terminals and a pipeline network. The emirate also has the Hamriyah Free Zone and SAIF Zone, with smaller classified areas at industrial sites. This page explains what to look for in an intrinsically safe mobile phone for Sharjah, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.

What Sharjah means for portable equipment

Sajaa assets

SNOC operates the Sajaa assets: four producing gas fields, a hydrocarbon processing complex, two marine terminals and a subsurface gas storage field.

Ports and free zones

Hamriyah Free Zone, established in 1995, has a 14 m deep port, and Sharjah is the only emirate with ports on both the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman coasts. Classified areas are spread across many small tenants.

More about Sharjah that matters for portable equipment

Sharjah: industry on the ground

The city is a centre for industry and contributes about 7.4 per cent of the UAE's GDP, so industrial sites are numerous and varied.

Sharjah: geography and layout

Sharjah city covers about 235 square km with more than 1.8 million residents, and it is the third most populous city in the UAE.

Sharjah: logistics and access

The emirate has three major seaports, Port Khalid, Hamriyah Port and Khorfakkan Port, the last on the Gulf of Oman coast.

Sharjah: logistics and access

The E11 Al Ittihad Road and the E611 Emirates Road connect Sharjah to Dubai, and Emirates Road also reaches Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah.

The term · intrinsically safe

What “intrinsically safe” means for a smartphone

Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.

The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.

In Sharjah. Rounds at a gas plant cover processing units, pipelines, storage and condensate handling. A handheld intrinsically safe device lets operators log readings and photograph equipment in classified areas as they walk, and would also suit smaller free-zone sites with a few classified spots. The IS-04Z1 is designed for this.

Questions · Sharjah

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an intrinsically safe mobile phone in Sharjah today?

Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.

What does an intrinsically safe mobile phone in Sharjah cost?

SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.

What does ‘intrinsically safe’ mean for the IS-04Z1?

The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.

Which areas at Sharjah would use it?

Likely candidates are gas processing plant, gas and condensate pipelines and storage, marine terminals, port fuel handling. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.

Is intrinsically safe the same as explosion proof?

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.

Is Sharjah mainly an industrial or an oil and gas market?

Both. Sharjah's gas processing and storage are run by the emirate's national oil company, while many smaller factories, ports and free zones add classified areas on a smaller scale. Check each tenant's rules, as Sharjah has no single operator for everything.

How do I reach Sharjah sites from Dubai?

By the E11 Al Ittihad Road or the E611 Emirates Road, both of which connect the two cities and are often busy. Allow extra time in peak hours, and book site access in advance, since many industrial estates and ports require passes.

Who sets equipment rules in Sharjah's free zones?

SNOC and free-zone tenants set their own equipment requirements, and SAIF Zone alone hosts more than 6,000 companies. There is no single rule for every site. Ask the specific tenant or operator's HSE team what evidence a phone needs before use in a classified area.
