Suncor: industry on the ground
The Strathcona refinery near Edmonton runs entirely on oil sands based feedstocks at 135,000 barrels a day, while the Montreal refinery handles 137,000 barrels a day and makes asphalts, solvents and petrochemicals.
Suncor is a Calgary-based integrated energy company specialising in synthetic crude from oil sands. It operates oil sands sites near Fort McMurray and holds a majority stake in Syncrude, with refineries in Edmonton, Sarnia, Montreal and Commerce City, Colorado. This page explains what to look for in an intrinsically safe mobile phone for Suncor, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Suncor: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Canada. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The main sites and the hazardous-area types a portable device is likely to meet at this organisation.
Prospective suppliers complete an intake form on Suncor's website; if capabilities match its needs they may be contacted for registration and pre-qualification, and high-volume goods suppliers may be asked to transact on SAP Ariba Network. The Ex certificate and an organisation's own vendor or engineering approval are two separate timelines; SAMS is working towards both and holds neither today.
The Strathcona refinery near Edmonton runs entirely on oil sands based feedstocks at 135,000 barrels a day, while the Montreal refinery handles 137,000 barrels a day and makes asphalts, solvents and petrochemicals.
Suncor is based in Calgary and owns and operates an oil sands upgrading plant near Fort McMurray in Alberta, and is described as the world's largest producer of bitumen.
The Sarnia refinery in Ontario is listed at 85,000 barrels a day, so Ontario's Chemical Valley area is also part of Suncor's downstream footprint.
Suncor's 2009 merger with Petro-Canada created a combined company worth about C$43.3 billion, and in October 2023 it bought TotalEnergies' Canadian operations for C$1.47 billion.
Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.
The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.
In Suncor. Rounds, turnarounds and inspections across Base Plant, MacKay River, Fort Hills and the refineries involve photographing equipment, reading tags and completing permits in classified areas. A handheld designed as intrinsically safe could do this on one device. The IS-04Z1 is designed for the purpose, though certification is still in progress.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Typical areas are refinery process units and tank farms at Edmonton, Sarnia and Montreal, the oil sands upgrader near Fort McMurray and Syncrude's process plants. Mines and offices are usually unclassified. Zoning is decided per site, so ask for area classification drawings first.
Winters in northern Alberta can be very cold and summers short and warm, so battery capacity, touchscreen response with gloves and condensation are practical concerns. Check the rated operating range and ask each site for its cold-weather work rules.
The classification documents differ by site, so compare the marking with each one. Oil sands units and refineries such as Edmonton or Sarnia may use Zones or Divisions. The IS-04Z1 has no certificate yet and its target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. Confirm with Suncor's HSE team.
