Intrinsically Safe Cell Phone Distributor in Austria

The IS-04Z1 is an ex proof phone designed to ATEX 2014/34/EU for gas and dust atmospheres, built for refinery turnarounds, gas stations on the transit grid, steel works and fibre plants. Borealis, headquartered in Vienna, is Europe's second-largest polyolefins producer and a major petrochemicals company, with plants in Austria, Germany, Belgium, Finland and Sweden. An intrinsically safe cell phone distributor in Austria would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.

More about Austria that matters for portable equipment

Austria: infrastructure

More than 3,000 hydro plants provided 54% of installed generating capacity in 2021, and Verbund generates about 90% of its power from hydro, so dam and turbine-hall work dominates the electricity side.

Austria: infrastructure

OMV opened the Schwechat refinery near Vienna in 1960, and since 1970 the Adria-Vienna Pipeline has delivered crude from the marine terminal at Trieste, Italy, to Schwechat.

Austria: industry on the ground

Machinery and equipment, vehicles, chemicals, metals, and iron and steel are leading sectors, so chemical plants, foundries and paint and coating lines add solvent and dust hazards beyond oil and gas.

Austria: who works there

OMV AG, an integrated oil, gas and petrochemical group, is Austria's largest energy business, with a turnover of about 36 billion euros in 2021, and its refining and chemicals sites are typical Zone 1 and Zone 2 workplaces.

The term · intrinsically safe

What “intrinsically safe” means for a smartphone

Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.

The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.

In Austria. Many Austrian rounds are solitary: a valve station on the transit line or a wellhead in the Marchfeld is often worked alone. An intrinsically safe handheld is designed to be carried to the wellhead or compressor yard, with four-constellation GNSS and 4G LTE keeping a position and a link where one operator network thins between villages.

The route · distribution

Distributing the IS-04Z1 in Austria

Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Austria. Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.

What SAMS looks for in a partner

Operator relationships
Existing supplier registrations or a clear route to them with the main operators and contractors in Austria.
Ex-competent staff
People who understand zone classification, markings and the conditions of a certificate.

And equally important

Local-language support
Documentation, training and helpdesk in the languages the workforce uses.
Service capability
Spares, battery replacement and repair routed through SAMS-approved channels.
Questions · Austria

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an intrinsically safe cell phone in Austria today?

No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.

What does an intrinsically safe cell phone in Austria cost?

There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.

What does ‘intrinsically safe’ mean for the IS-04Z1?

The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.

Which sites in Austria does this cover?

The market guide for Austria covers Schwechat, Baumgarten an der March, Linz, Donawitz and Leoben, among others. Site-level pages are linked below.

How do I become a SAMS distributor for Austria?

Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Austria.

Does Austria use ATEX for handheld devices in hazardous areas?

Yes, as an EU member Austria applies ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU to equipment, and workplaces are zoned under Directive 1999/92/EC. Devices for Zone 1 or Zone 2 areas normally need the Ex marking, CE marking and documentation. Check the operator's list of accepted categories.

Is OMV the main hazardous-area operator in Austria?

OMV AG is the largest energy business, with integrated oil, gas and petrochemical activity, so it is a major source of classified areas. Other sites include chemical plants and utility sites. Supplier approval is run by each company, so contact its procurement and safety teams.

Does an Austrian approval follow the ATEX certificate?

No: ATEX 2014/34/EU, transposed by the Explosionsschutzverordnung 2015, is the whole product-side requirement and there is no separate Austrian product approval. The employer's duties sit under the VEXAT, which is where evaluation time goes. SAMS holds no ATEX certificate yet. Confirm what your site's explosion protection document needs.
