Mature basin
The basin produced 828,600 barrels of oil equivalent a day in 2025, well below its 2011 peak, with many older units needing regular maintenance.
The Campos Basin is an offshore oil province off Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo states, covering about 115,000 square kilometres. In December 2025 it had 39 platforms in operation, 18 of them FPSOs, creating Zone 1 areas on process decks and in storage and offloading areas. If you are specifying an industrial mobile phone for Campos Basin, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Campos Basin: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Campos Basin. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

People and supplies are largely handled through Macae, which has an airport used for offshore flights and the Imbetiba port.
In 2014 about 62.7 percent of Petrobras' Brazilian proved developed reserves were in the Campos Basin, and the company set its basin headquarters in Macae in the 1970s.
Offshore exploration began in 1968 and the first well was drilled in 1971; the Garoupa field was found in 1974 and the first production came from Enchova in 1977 at 124 m of water.
The Campos Basin covers about 115,000 km2, almost all of it offshore, with only about 500 km2 onshore near Rio de Janeiro, and is one of 12 coastal sedimentary basins in Brazil.
By 2003 some 41 oil and gas fields had been discovered 50 to 140 km from the coast in water 80 to 2,400 m deep, and the basin was producing about 1.21 million barrels per day.
“Industrial” describes a phone built for plant conditions: sealed, drop-resistant and manageable at fleet scale through Android Enterprise. It does not by itself mean the phone may enter a classified area. Only a device with a valid explosion-protection certificate and marking may do that.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to be both an industrial Android phone (IP68, 4,000 mAh battery, 50 MP camera, Android 16 with EMM and MDM support) and an intrinsically safe one. Its explosion-protection certificates are in progress and have not been issued.
In Campos Basin. People and supplies are largely handled through Macae, so fleet preparation is done there before shipment offshore. EMM or MDM enrolment, battery charging and checks all fit that shore-base routine. Charging is done in safe areas, and offshore replacement is slow, so spares should be on board.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Yes by design: IP68 sealing, a 4,000 mAh battery, a 50 MP camera and Android 16 with EMM and MDM support. The explosion-protection certificates are separate and still in progress.
Likely candidates are platform process modules, wellhead areas, crude storage and offloading, gas compression. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Not necessarily, but the operator differs. Some shallow fields passed to Trident Energy in 2020 while Petrobras runs many others, so induction rules and approved-device lists can vary. Confirm with each operator's safety team which markings and approvals they accept.
Typically wellheads, separation and gas treatment, compression, crude storage and offloading, and the helideck fuel area. Classification drawings from the unit operator give the exact zones, gas groups and temperature classes, so request them before choosing a handheld device.
The basin is mature, and many older units need regular maintenance, so rounds are frequent. That favours a rugged, intrinsically safe handheld, but each platform has its own classification. Ask the operator for it rather than assuming that one marking suits every unit.
