Bahrain: rules and approvals
The TRA released version 1.1 of its Technical Specifications Requirements for Type Approval on 30 July 2026, replacing the first edition of 27 February 2024, so documents prepared earlier should be checked.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe handset for people who cross into classified areas in Bahrain every shift: refinery and gas-plant operators, smelter potroom crews, inspection engineers and the HSE and telecoms teams who equip them. This page explains what to look for in an industrial mobile phone for Bahrain, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.

Bahrain covers about 694 square kilometres, with Bahrain Island making up roughly 78 percent. It lies about 24 km off the Saudi coast and 28 km from Qatar.
Mina Salman is Bahrain's primary cargo port and customs point, covering 80 hectares since 1962, and more than 75 percent of its cargo is containerised.
Bapco was founded in 1929, found the first oil field in the Gulf outside Iran in 1932 and built the first Gulf refinery outside Iran in 1936, so some plant is very old.
“Industrial” describes a phone built for plant conditions: sealed, drop-resistant and manageable at fleet scale through Android Enterprise. It does not by itself mean the phone may enter a classified area. Only a device with a valid explosion-protection certificate and marking may do that.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to be both an industrial Android phone (IP68, 4,000 mAh battery, 50 MP camera, Android 16 with EMM and MDM support) and an intrinsically safe one. Its explosion-protection certificates are in progress and have not been issued.
In Bahrain. A mixed national and expatriate workforce shares equipment across Bapco, Alba, Banagas and contractors. Android 16 carries Arabic and English on one build, and EMM and MDM enrolment pushes the corporate profile and camera policy centrally, which matters where photography runs on permit. Charging stays in safe areas, away from the potline or tank farm.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Yes by design: IP68 sealing, a 4,000 mAh battery, a 50 MP camera and Android 16 with EMM and MDM support. The explosion-protection certificates are separate and still in progress.

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Yes. Telecommunications equipment imported into Bahrain is subject to TRA type approval, and a certificate normally lasts three years. The application is made through a Bahraini supplier, and the TRA has just released version 1.1 of its technical specifications, so check current requirements.
The country is about 694 square kilometres and Bahrain Island is only 48 km long, so Manama is within short road distance of Sitra and the main industrial areas. Site access, not distance, is usually the planning constraint.
Photography often runs on permit at Bahraini sites. Android 16 with EMM and MDM lets the camera policy and corporate profile be set centrally, so the camera can be restricted or allowed per site. The 50 MP camera is a feature, not a right of use. Check the permit rules with the site operator.
