Australia: people and language
The Pilbara has more than 45,000 residents, most living in the western third in towns such as Port Hedland, Karratha and Wickham, while the eastern third is almost entirely desert.
A Zone 1 / Zone 21 smartphone for crews on Australian LNG trains, offshore facilities, processing plants and remote mine sites. This page explains what to look for in an industrial cell phone for Australia, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Australia: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Australia. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The main operators, industrial areas and sites that the SAMS Australia market guide covers.
The Pilbara has more than 45,000 residents, most living in the western third in towns such as Port Hedland, Karratha and Wickham, while the eastern third is almost entirely desert.
The Pilbara covers 507,896 square kilometres in the north of Western Australia, a large, dry, sparsely populated region known for iron ore, with four local government areas.
ANZEx has been owned by JAS-ANZ since August 2016, and Queensland's Electrical Safety Regulation 2026 took effect on 1 September 2026, so state rules continue to evolve.
Operators typically check for a current IECEx or ANZEx certificate, a suitable gas group and temperature class, a Hazardous Area Verification Dossier under AS/NZS 60079.14 and installer competency.
“Industrial” describes a phone built for plant conditions: sealed, drop-resistant and manageable at fleet scale through Android Enterprise. It does not by itself mean the phone may enter a classified area. Only a device with a valid explosion-protection certificate and marking may do that.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to be both an industrial Android phone (IP68, 4,000 mAh battery, 50 MP camera, Android 16 with EMM and MDM support) and an intrinsically safe one. Its explosion-protection certificates are in progress and have not been issued.
In Australia. Rostered crews and contractors rotate through sites, so handsets move between people. Android 16 with EMM and MDM support allows enrolment, remote lock, remote wipe and controlled updates when crews change. Coverage uses 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC, with four-constellation GNSS holding a position in a pit, and charging stays in a safe area.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Yes by design: IP68 sealing, a 4,000 mAh battery, a 50 MP camera and Android 16 with EMM and MDM support. The explosion-protection certificates are separate and still in progress.
The market guide for Australia covers Karratha and the Burrup Peninsula, Onslow, Western Australia, Darwin, Gladstone and Curtis Island, among others. Site-level pages are linked below.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
The Pilbara is hot, dry and dusty, with long distances between sites and towns. Check the operating temperature range, dust ingress rating and battery life in heat, and confirm with the operator any site rules on permits, inductions and mobile devices in classified areas.
It is the installation documentation expected under AS/NZS 60079.14, showing that the equipment, its certificate and its installation suit the classified area. Operators and inspectors look for it before energising equipment, so ask the site electrical team what must be supplied with portable and fixed equipment.
The target marking is T4 with the ambient range to be fixed on the certificate, which is not yet issued. The 4,000 mAh battery is sized for a roster day with radio, camera and GNSS running. Check the certified range against your site's worst summer ambient and trial a unit before fleet orders.
