Sasol: industry on the ground
Beyond fuels, Sasol sells over 200 chemical products worldwide, including ammonia-based fertilizers and explosives, which adds dust, ammonia and solvent hazards to the plant mix.
Sasol is a South African chemicals and energy company producing fuel components, chemicals and co-products such as ammonia, methanol and sulphur. Its main South African complexes are at Secunda and Sasolburg, and it also has gas operations in Mozambique. Buyers searching for an IECEx smartphone supplier for Sasol can take the datasheet and the certification schedule for the IS-04Z1 now; supply follows certification.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. An IECEx smartphone for Sasol cannot be bought yet: the SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued), and the datasheet, certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in South Africa. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of its operations and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Sasol runs supplier applications through the Supplier Information Management (SIM) module on Ariba for suppliers working with it in South Africa and Mozambique; confirm current requirements with Sasol Supplier Management. The Ex certificate and an organisation's own vendor or engineering approval are two separate timelines; SAMS is working towards both and holds neither today.
Beyond fuels, Sasol sells over 200 chemical products worldwide, including ammonia-based fertilizers and explosives, which adds dust, ammonia and solvent hazards to the plant mix.
Most gasifiers at Sasolburg have been replaced by autothermal reformers fed with natural gas piped from Mozambique, which shifts feedstock handling from coal to gas pipelines and process gas.
The Sasol 1 site began commissioning in 1954, Sasol 2 was completed in 1980 and Sasol 3 came on stream in 1982, so the Secunda and Sasolburg complexes combine plant of very different ages.
Sasol Mining operates six coal mines that supply the Secunda synfuels and Sasolburg complexes, so underground coal-mine conditions sit next to chemical plant conditions inside one company.
IECEx is the international scheme for certifying equipment used in explosive atmospheres. A certificate of conformity is issued by an accredited certification body against a specific edition of the IEC 60079 standards and carries a schedule of conditions of safe use. It is not a legal requirement in most countries on its own, but many national schemes accept it as the technical basis.
The IECEx certificate for the IS-04Z1 is in progress and has not been issued. The marking target is Ex ib IIC T4, the intrinsic safety concept for Zone 1 gas with the hardest gas group (IIC) and a 135 °C temperature class.
In Sasol. Large South African complexes such as Secunda draw in international EPCs and specialist shutdown contractors, many of whom know the IECEx scheme. A reviewer should read the certificate of conformity together with its schedule of conditions. The IS-04Z1 is designed for IECEx and certification is in progress.
There is no stock to order for Sasol yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, certification is in progress, and supply will run through authorised distributors after the certificates are issued. Procurement teams can prepare now with the datasheet, the certification schedule and a safe-area evaluation.

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
No. The IECEx certificate is in progress and has not been issued. SAMS will publish the number when it exists.
Sasol runs supplier applications through the Supplier Information Management (SIM) module on Ariba for suppliers working with it in South Africa and Mozambique; confirm current requirements with Sasol Supplier Management.
Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.
Not necessarily. Underground coal mines in South Africa fall under mining safety legislation with its own approval routes, while chemical plants work to industrial classified-area practice. Confirm with Sasol Mining and with each plant which approvals and certificates it expects for portable equipment.
Both sites are on South Africa's inland Highveld, where days can be warm and winter nights cold with frost, and dust is common near mines and stockpiles. Check the device's operating temperature range, dust ingress rating and battery behaviour in cold, and ask the site about its limits.
The IS-04Z1 has IP68 protection and a 4,000 mAh battery, but cold-weather battery behaviour and the permitted temperature range will come from the final certificate and datasheet. Check them for Highveld winters. IP68 is not explosion protection, and certification is still in progress.
