What “IECEx” means for a smartphone
IECEx is the international scheme for certifying equipment used in explosive atmospheres. A certificate of conformity is issued by an accredited certification body against a specific edition of the IEC 60079 standards and carries a schedule of conditions of safe use. It is not a legal requirement in most countries on its own, but many national schemes accept it as the technical basis.
The IECEx certificate for the IS-04Z1 is in progress and has not been issued. The marking target is Ex ib IIC T4, the intrinsic safety concept for Zone 1 gas with the hardest gas group (IIC) and a 135 °C temperature class.
In Oman. Oman combines a dominant national operator with international operators, such as Occidental Oman and CC Energy Development, plus visiting contractors. IECEx is the shared language between them. Ask for the certificate of conformity and its schedule of conditions, which fix the marking, ambient range and any special conditions of use. The programme is in progress.

What does an IECEx smartphone in Oman cost?
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
Does the IS-04Z1 hold an IECEx certificate?
No. The IECEx certificate is in progress and has not been issued. SAMS will publish the number when it exists.

Is intrinsically safe the same as explosion proof?
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Do 3G phones still work in Oman?
No. Oman announced in July 2025 that it had completed the shutdown of 3G networks, upgrading to 4G and 5G. Choose devices with LTE support.
What approval do phones need in Oman?
The TRA issues type approval certificates, now valid for four years, with a local representative and a compliance mark required. A new self-declaration route for importers started in 2026, so confirm the current route for each model.
How does the Dhofar khareef affect equipment?
From June to September the monsoon leaves Salalah in persistent damp and fog, and Sohar and Sur are humid and salt laden all year. A rugged build and IP68 sealing are aimed at that, but IP68 is not explosion protection. Check the certified ambient range once published.
