Monsoon climate
Mumbai has a tropical wet and dry climate with intense rain from June to September, so outdoor devices need good water and corrosion protection.
Mumbai has a deep natural harbour on the Konkan coast, a population of almost 12.5 million in 2011 and a metropolitan region of over 20 million. Refining, petroleum terminals and chemical plants create Zone 1 areas, and crude arrives from offshore fields such as Mumbai High. This page explains what to look for in an IECEx mobile phone for Mumbai, Maharashtra, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Mumbai, Maharashtra: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Mumbai India. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Mumbai has a tropical wet and dry climate with intense rain from June to September, so outdoor devices need good water and corrosion protection.
The refineries sit in the Mahul-Chembur area within the metropolitan region, which Wikipedia notes is surrounded by a number of chemical plants, so site access and security controls are normally strict.
The Telecommunication Engineering Centre has a regional centre in Mumbai that tests telecom products and issues service test certificates.
The climate is tropical wet and dry, with a nearly rainless stretch from October to May and a south-west monsoon from June to September that peaks in July.
Mumbai is prone to flooding during monsoons, and occasionally experiences tropical cyclones, so site access and logistics can be disrupted.
Mumbai's industrialisation after the 1960s expanded petrochemicals, electronics and automobiles, and major refineries such as the Mumbai Refinery at Trombay and the BPCL refinery were established.
IECEx is the international scheme for certifying equipment used in explosive atmospheres. A certificate of conformity is issued by an accredited certification body against a specific edition of the IEC 60079 standards and carries a schedule of conditions of safe use. It is not a legal requirement in most countries on its own, but many national schemes accept it as the technical basis.
The IECEx certificate for the IS-04Z1 is in progress and has not been issued. The marking target is Ex ib IIC T4, the intrinsic safety concept for Zone 1 gas with the hardest gas group (IIC) and a 135 °C temperature class.
In Mumbai, Maharashtra. Refinery projects at Mahul and Trombay involve international engineering firms alongside Indian contractors. An IECEx certificate of conformity with its schedule of conditions is a reference such firms compare across projects. SAMS is pursuing IECEx for the IS-04Z1, and nothing has been issued.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
No. The IECEx certificate is in progress and has not been issued. SAMS will publish the number when it exists.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, petroleum storage terminals, marine oil handling, chemical plants. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Jawaharlal Nehru Port is the main container port for the region, with 30 container freight stations and links to inland depots. Use an experienced freight forwarder and confirm customs documents in advance.
Rain is heavy from June to September, peaking in July, and monsoon floods can disrupt roads and ports. Plan deliveries and site visits outside the peak monsoon where possible, and transport devices in waterproof cases.
Intense rain from June to September makes water and corrosion protection important for outdoor work. A sealed IP68 design helps, but users should still check seals and dry the device. Ask the operator how outdoor handheld use is managed during heavy rain.
