EQUATE: logistics and access
Products are marketed across Asia, the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, so bulk export loading by sea is a regular activity.
Kuwait's communications regulator, CITRA, follows a European documentation approach, and its type approvals were extended from one to three years. Owners are Petrochemical Industries Company (42.5%), Dow (42.5%), Boubyan Petrochemical (9%) and Al Qurain Petrochemical Industries (6%). This page explains what to look for in an IECEx mobile phone for EQUATE, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for EQUATE: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.
| Check | What to look for | IS-04Z1 today |
|---|---|---|
| Certificate of conformity | Number checkable on the IECEx online register | In progress; not issued |
| Standards edition | The IEC 60079 edition the certificate cites | Stated on the certificate when issued |
| Schedule of conditions | Limits of use, batteries and accessories | Published with the certificate |
| Where it applies | EQUATE: Ethylene and propylene units, Polyethylene plants, Ethane and naphtha feedstock handling | Classified by the site operator |

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Kuwait. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of its operations and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Supplier registration and equipment approval are run by the organisation itself; confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams. The Ex certificate and an organisation's own vendor or engineering approval are two separate timelines; SAMS is working towards both and holds neither today.

Greater EQUATE brings EQUATE, the Kuwait Styrene Company, the Kuwait Paraxylene Production Company and the Kuwait Olefins Company under one integrated operational umbrella, so one site-wide safety system covers several plants.
EQUATE has a sustainability strategy of 16 initiatives aimed at 2025, covering the work environment and operations, so contractors may meet formal environmental and workplace reporting requirements.
EQUATE bought MEGlobal in 2015 and became the second largest ethylene glycol producer in the world, with plants in Kuwait, North America and Europe.
IECEx is the international scheme for certifying equipment used in explosive atmospheres. A certificate of conformity is issued by an accredited certification body against a specific edition of the IEC 60079 standards and carries a schedule of conditions of safe use. It is not a legal requirement in most countries on its own, but many national schemes accept it as the technical basis.
The IECEx certificate for the IS-04Z1 is in progress and has not been issued. The marking target is Ex ib IIC T4, the intrinsic safety concept for Zone 1 gas with the hardest gas group (IIC) and a 135 °C temperature class.
In EQUATE. EQUATE has international ownership and relies on visiting licensors and turnaround contractors, who commonly hold IECEx paperwork. Reviewers would look for a certificate of conformity and its schedule of conditions. IECEx is a target for the IS-04Z1 and remains in progress, so treat it as a planned route and not an approval already held.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
No. The IECEx certificate is in progress and has not been issued. SAMS will publish the number when it exists.

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Plant owners normally run their own vendor registration and equipment approval, and EQUATE describes a formal safety and sustainability management approach. Confirm the current supplier-registration steps and device requirements directly with EQUATE's procurement and HSE teams.
The Greater EQUATE group includes olefins, styrene and paraxylene companies as well as the main EQUATE plants, producing ethylene, ethylene glycol, polyethylene, PET, styrene, paraxylene and benzene. That means gas, flammable liquids and polymer powder hazards; confirm zones with the site's area classification documents.
The hazards differ in detail, but the check is the same: compare the zone, gas group and temperature class in EQUATE's drawings with the device marking. Ethylene is IIB, hydrogen IIC. The IS-04Z1 target marking is IIC, but no certificate has been issued, so rely on EQUATE's own assessment.
