Kuwait: climate and equipment wear
Rainfall averages 75 to 150 millimetres a year, mostly in spring, and winter nights can drop to about 3 degrees Celsius.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe handset for people who cross into classified areas in Kuwait every shift: gathering centre operators, refinery crews, inspection engineers and the HSE and telecoms teams who equip them. This page sets out how a hazardous area smartphone supply route to Kuwait will work for the IS-04Z1, and what is and is not available before launch.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. A hazardous area smartphone for Kuwait cannot be bought yet: the SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued), and the datasheet, certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

Rainfall averages 75 to 150 millimetres a year, mostly in spring, and winter nights can drop to about 3 degrees Celsius.
Greater Burgan is the world's largest sandstone oil field and the second largest overall, with Kuwait Oil Company beginning commercial production there in 1946.
Kuwait's refineries include Mina Al-Ahmadi, Mina Abdullah and Al Zour; Shuaiba closed in 2017 to be repurposed for the Clean Fuels Project.
KNPC was established in 1960, became fully government-owned in 1975, and in April 2025 Kuwait Petroleum Corporation announced its merger with KIPIC.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Kuwait. Kuwait concentrates classified work in a strip south from Kuwait Bay: Ahmadi, the Mina Al-Ahmadi and Mina Abdullah refineries, Al-Zour, Shuaiba and the power and water plants at Sabiya, with the Partitioned Zone at Wafra. Each owner classifies its own areas. The operator, not SAMS, issues the zone drawing the handset is checked against.
Supply of the IS-04Z1 to Kuwait starts only after certification, through authorised distributors. Until then a buyer can request the datasheet and the written certification schedule, and arrange a safe-area evaluation unit, which puts the site on the list for the right local channel at launch.

Which certificates are in progress, in what order, and what is still to be confirmed.
Evaluation units can be used for connectivity, MDM enrolment and workflow testing outside classified areas.

No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.

Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.
Kuwait Oil Company for upstream and KNPC, now merging with KIPIC, for refining, plus petrochemical and power operators. Each has its own supplier registration and equipment standards.
Yes. Telecom and radio equipment needs CITRA type approval, which accepts EU CE marking and test standards. A local representative is not required, the certificate lasts three years and processing typically takes several weeks.
Bluetooth pairing is designed so a detector and the handset can work together on one person. Sour gas facilities such as Sabriya and Umm Niqa already require detection as routine, so check the pairing and alarm procedure with the HSE team before adding any device to that practice.
