Fields
Drilling shifted west as eastern fields such as East Texas, discovered in 1930, declined. The Permian Basin now dominates onshore output.
Texas is the largest US crude oil producer, with onshore fields concentrated in the Permian Basin in the west and the historic East Texas field. The Permian Basin of West Texas alone supplies nearly 40 percent of US oil production, which explains why Midland and Odessa dominate equipment demand. This page explains what to look for in a hazardous area smartphone for Texas oil and gas fields, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Texas oil and gas fields: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Texas Oil Fields. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

The Railroad Commission of Texas oversees oil and gas exploration, production and transport, including hydrogen sulphide safety.
The Commission keeps about 132 million pages of well history documents, from drilling permits onward, and publishes monthly production data by county.
Texas hosts the headquarters of several major oil companies and many of the world's largest oilfield services firms, so decision makers are often close to the field.
In May 2026 operators reported production from 156,120 oil wells and 84,661 gas wells, with statewide crude output averaging about 4.18 million barrels a day.
The Railroad Commission of Texas regulates the oil and gas industry, gas utilities, pipeline safety and LPG safety, and was created by the legislature in 1891.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Texas oil and gas fields. Zone 1 work arises at wellsites, tank batteries, drilling rigs, compressor stations and gas plants. Operators classify their own sites, and the Railroad Commission of Texas oversees oil and gas exploration, production and transport. SAMS does not classify areas or act as a regulator.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.
Likely candidates are wellsites and tank batteries, drilling rigs, compressor stations, gas processing plants. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Operators reported 156,120 oil wells and 84,661 gas wells in May 2026. That scale means field crews are widely dispersed, so reliable communication and battery life matter as much as location.
No, conditions differ widely: the Gulf Coast is humid and hurricane-exposed, West Texas is hot, dry and dusty, and parts of the state see winter frost. Match specifications to the region where the equipment will be used.
The Railroad Commission of Texas oversees oil and gas exploration, production and transport, including hydrogen sulphide safety. It does not certify phones. Equipment requirements generally come from producers and contractors, and the IS-04Z1 holds no certificate yet. Confirm requirements with the site operator.
