Peru: background
Shell discovered the Camisea fields in 1986 under blocks 38 and 42, a contract signed in 1981 that covered about 20,000 square kilometres of the southern Ucayali Basin.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe handset for people who cross into classified areas in Peru every shift: copper mine and concentrator operators, Camisea gas-field crews, refinery engineers, and the HSE and telecoms teams who equip them. This page explains what to look for in a hazardous area smartphone for Peru, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Peru: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

Shell discovered the Camisea fields in 1986 under blocks 38 and 42, a contract signed in 1981 that covered about 20,000 square kilometres of the southern Ucayali Basin.
The open pit at Cerro de Pasco is a well-known silver mine in the Andes, a reminder that much Peruvian mining takes place in mountain terrain far from the coast.
In 2019 Peru was the world's second-largest producer of copper, silver and zinc, third for lead and eighth for gold, so mining is a major source of hazardous and dusty areas.
Camisea's remote jungle location and Andean pipeline route mean access is long and difficult, so spares, battery supplies and support for portable devices need planning in advance.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Peru. Peru's classified-area work runs from the high-altitude copper belt in the south, including Cuajone, Toquepala, Antamina, Cerro Verde and Las Bambas, to the Camisea gas fields in the Amazon foothills and the Talara refinery on the north coast. Operators classify their own areas, so SAMS supplies no zone drawings.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
MTC, the Ministerio de Transportes y Comunicaciones, runs type approval for radio equipment, and a testing partner reports that it is based on FCC standards with no local laboratory tests, no local representative requirement and no extra label. Confirm current requirements with MTC or a local agent.
Typically at the Camisea wells and plants in the Amazon basin, the Malvinas separation plant, the Pisco terminal, refineries on the coast, and mines with diesel storage, explosives and dust. Each operator issues its own classification, so request the zone drawing and gas or dust group.
The device is designed with an outdoor-readable display and rugged sealing, but ambient and altitude limits are fixed by the certificate, which is not yet issued. Compare the published range with your mine's conditions and confirm with the operator before use at sites above 4,000 metres.
