Oman: geography and layout
Duqm, about 550 km from Muscat, hosts a Special Economic Zone with a refinery on 900 hectares and a port, and Duqm Airport opened in 2014.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, aimed at the field operators, technicians, inspection engineers and HSE teams who work inside Oman’s classified areas. This page explains what to look for in a hazardous area smartphone for Oman, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Oman: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Oman. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The classified areas, operators and sites below are the ones covered in the SAMS Oman market guide.
Duqm, about 550 km from Muscat, hosts a Special Economic Zone with a refinery on 900 hectares and a port, and Duqm Airport opened in 2014.
Petroleum Development Oman delivers most of the country's crude and gas, owned 60 percent by the government, 34 percent by Shell, 4 percent by TotalEnergies and 2 percent by Partex.
Muscat has a hot arid climate with about 10 centimetres of rain a year, falling mostly from December to April, so heat rather than rain is the main stress.
Oman's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority type approval is valid for four years, previously it had no expiry, and a local representative and compliance mark are required.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Oman. Oman's classified areas run from the interior fields of Block 6 to the Dhofar coast, with industrial clusters at Sohar, Sur (Qalhat) and Duqm. Types include oil and sour gas fields, steam and thermal recovery, LNG and a refinery. The operator classifies each area, and SAMS does not issue zone drawings.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
No. Oman announced in July 2025 that it had completed the shutdown of 3G networks, upgrading to 4G and 5G. Choose devices with LTE support.
The TRA issues type approval certificates, now valid for four years, with a local representative and a compliance mark required. A new self-declaration route for importers started in 2026, so confirm the current route for each model.
From June to September the monsoon leaves Salalah in persistent damp and fog, and Sohar and Sur are humid and salt laden all year. A rugged build and IP68 sealing are aimed at that, but IP68 is not explosion protection. Check the certified ambient range once published.
