The term · hazardous area

What “hazardous area” means for a smartphone

A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.

No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.

In Norwich and the Norfolk coast. Norwich itself has no classified-area sites. The hazardous areas are on the north Norfolk coast at Bacton, a complex of six gas terminals plus the Interconnector and BBL terminals, with gas process, receipt and blending areas. The terminal operators classify them. Great Yarmouth port facilities add offshore support areas, which may or may not be classified.

Questions · Norwich

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy a hazardous area smartphone in Norwich today?

No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.

What does a hazardous area smartphone in Norwich cost?

SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.

Which hazardous areas is the IS-04Z1 designed for?

Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.

Which areas at Norwich and the Norfolk coast would use it?

Likely candidates are gas terminal process areas, gas receipt and blending, interconnector terminals, offshore support port facilities. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.

Is intrinsically safe the same as explosion proof?

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.

Which standards apply to Ex phones used in Norfolk?

In Great Britain, equipment for explosive atmospheres is normally supplied under UK regulations with UKCA marking, and CE-marked ATEX equipment has been widely accepted under transitional rules. Check the current position with the site operator and certification body before ordering handheld devices.

How long does it take to reach offshore energy sites from Norwich?

Great Yarmouth is about 20 miles east, so road transfers of equipment and engineers are short, but offshore access depends on vessel and helicopter schedules and weather. Plan equipment delivery and testing onshore at the port base ahead of crew changes, and confirm timings with the operator.

Is Norwich a hazardous-area site?

No. It is a cathedral city and service centre for East Anglia. Nearby hazardous-area work centres on the Bacton gas terminal complex on the north Norfolk coast and the offshore energy port at Great Yarmouth. Confirm requirements with the site operator for the specific terminal.
