LNG terminal
Petronet's Kochi terminal at Puthuvype was commissioned in August 2013 with 5 million tonnes a year capacity and two full-containment tanks.
Kochi on the Kerala coast has the BPCL Kochi Refinery at Ambalamugal, rated at 15.5 million tonnes a year, and Petronet LNG's regasification terminal at Puthuvype. Petronet LNG operates a terminal at Kochi, which received its 100th cargo in July 2022, alongside its larger terminal at Dahej. This page explains what to look for in a hazardous area smartphone for Kochi, Kerala, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Kochi, Kerala: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Kochi India. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Petronet's Kochi terminal at Puthuvype was commissioned in August 2013 with 5 million tonnes a year capacity and two full-containment tanks.
Kerala's coast is generally humid with heavy monsoon rain, so ingress protection and corrosion resistance matter.
Kochi Refinery, now part of BPCL, is the largest public-sector refinery in India with a capacity of 15.5 million tonnes a year, at Ambalamugal about 12 kilometres east of the city centre.
Aromatics production for benzene and toluene began in 1989, and a bitumen oxidation unit of 378,000 tonnes a year started in 2008.
Kochi's urban area had over 2.1 million people in 2011, and the city is the financial, industrial and commercial capital of Kerala.
Kochi has a tropical monsoon climate with annual temperatures of 23 to 31 degrees Celsius and moderate to high humidity all year.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Kochi, Kerala. Kochi's hazardous areas include refinery process units, LNG regasification and storage, the single point mooring with crude pipelines, and petrochemical units. BPCL and Petronet LNG classify their own areas. PESO is the national regulator, and SAMS has no role in classifying or approving any area.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, lng regasification and storage, single point mooring and crude pipelines, petrochemical units. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
The refinery is at Ambalamugal, about 12 kilometres east of the city centre, and Kochi has air, road, rail and sea links. Agree gate access and induction with the operator in advance.
Kochi gets about 3,000 millimetres of rain a year over roughly 124 rainy days, with humidity moderate to high all year. Choose sealed housings with a high ingress rating, and store spares in dry conditions.
No. The refinery at Ambalamugal and the LNG terminal at Puthuvype are separate sites run by different operators, each with its own area records and permits. Confirm requirements with each operator separately. Approval at one site does not carry across.
