Egypt: geography and layout
The Suez Canal Economic Zone, established in 2015, covers about 461 square kilometres on both banks of the canal and includes dry port projects at Ismailia and 10th Ramadan.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe handset for people who cross into classified areas in Egypt every shift: Gulf of Suez platform crews, LNG terminal operators, refinery engineers and the HSE and telecoms teams who equip them. If you are specifying a hazardous area smartphone for Egypt, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Egypt: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

The Suez Canal Economic Zone, established in 2015, covers about 461 square kilometres on both banks of the canal and includes dry port projects at Ismailia and 10th Ramadan.
NTRA approval typically needs a local legal representative or importer and accepts international CE or FCC test reports, with certificates valid for a limited period, often one year.
The National Telecom Regulatory Authority must approve any equipment that uses radio frequencies or connects to public networks, including mobile phones, before it can be imported or sold in Egypt.
Egypt has set a target of 42 per cent renewable electricity by 2030 and is building nuclear capacity at El Dabaa, so new classified-area work will include non-fossil projects too.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Egypt. Egyptian classified areas run from the Gulf of Suez fields and Western Desert onshore production through Nile Delta gas plants and the Zohr deepwater gas development to the Idku and Damietta LNG terminals and the Suez and Alexandria refining belt. Operators, not SAMS, classify them.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Western Desert and Gulf of Suez sites typically combine high summer heat, dust and wind-blown sand, with salt air on the coast. Check the operating temperature range, dust ingress rating and enclosure corrosion resistance, and confirm any site limits with the operator or contractor.
Yes. NTRA covers radio and telecom approval, while the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality and the General Organization for Export and Import Control cover electrical safety and general product conformity. A device with batteries or chargers may need to satisfy both, so check each body's scope.
No: EGPC and its operating affiliates, along with international operators like Eni, each run vendor-registration and engineering-approval processes, so conformity alone does not guarantee listing. EOS and NTRA approvals are being pursued and are not finished. Confirm the route with the operator's procurement team.
