Hazardous Area Smartphone in Cairo

Cairo is a city rather than a single industrial site; the hazardous-area sites are in its surroundings. The Cairo Metro opened in 1987, is the oldest metro system in Africa and has over 1 billion passenger rides a year, so underground and railway systems are a major source of civil and electrical work. This page explains what to look for in a hazardous area smartphone for Greater Cairo, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.

More about Greater Cairo that matters for portable equipment

Greater Cairo: who works there

Egypt's national oil company is the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation, and Egypt has the sixth-largest proved oil reserves in Africa, over half of them offshore.

Greater Cairo: geography and layout

Cairo lies near the Nile Delta, was founded in 969 and is Egypt's capital and a regional centre of finance and commerce, so many buyers and contractors are based there even when sites are elsewhere.

Greater Cairo: people and language

Many international businesses and organisations have regional offices in Cairo, including the Arab League headquarters, so engineering and procurement teams are often briefed from the capital.

Greater Cairo: logistics and access

Like many megacities, Cairo suffers from high levels of pollution and traffic, so deliveries and site visits need extra time, and equipment should be dust-sealed against urban air.

The term · hazardous area

What “hazardous area” means for a smartphone

A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.

No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.

In Greater Cairo. Hazardous areas around Cairo include refinery process units, fuel storage, cement kiln fuel areas and factory solvent and gas areas. Each operator classifies its own. The Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality is listed, but its hazardous-area role is not confirmed. SAMS does not classify areas.

Questions · Cairo

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy a hazardous area smartphone in Cairo today?

Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.

What does a hazardous area smartphone in Cairo cost?

SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.

Which hazardous areas is the IS-04Z1 designed for?

Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.

Which areas at Greater Cairo would use it?

Likely candidates are refinery process units, fuel storage, cement kiln fuel areas, factory solvent and gas areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.

Is intrinsically safe the same as explosion proof?

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.

Does Cairo's dust and heat matter when choosing Ex phones?

Yes, Cairo is hot in summer, dusty and polluted, so check the dust ingress rating, the maximum ambient temperature on the certificate and the sealing of ports and charging contacts. Regular cleaning of connectors and spare batteries are practical for long outdoor shifts.

How should I plan deliveries to Cairo for a project elsewhere in Egypt?

Equipment typically arrives through Cairo airport or Egyptian ports and is cleared through customs before onward road or rail transport. Allow for traffic and customs time, check radio-equipment import rules and confirm who receives and stores devices at the site.

Can one approach cover refinery and cement sites?

Not necessarily. A refinery has hydrocarbon process units and storage, a cement plant has kiln fuel areas, and factories may have solvent or gas areas. Each operator sets its own classification and approval route. Request zone and gas group data from each site before assuming one device suits all.
