Brazil: rules and approvals
Certification is carried out by an INMETRO-accredited product certification body, called an OCP, and Model 5 certificates, which include a quality system audit and surveillance, are valid for six years.
The IS-04Z1 is an Ex mobile phone for people working inside classified areas on Brazilian platforms, refineries, petrochemical units, mills and terminals. This page explains what to look for in a hazardous area smartphone for Brazil, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Brazil: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Brazil. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The classified areas, operators and sites below are the ones covered in the SAMS Brazil market guide.
Certification is carried out by an INMETRO-accredited product certification body, called an OCP, and Model 5 certificates, which include a quality system audit and surveillance, are valid for six years.
Petrobras was created in 1953 under the slogan The Oil Is Ours, was given a legal monopoly, and is headquartered in Rio de Janeiro; its REDUC refinery began operating in 1961.
Portaria INMETRO No. 115 of 21 March 2022 sets the conformity assessment rules for electrical equipment in explosive atmospheres, and it replaced Portaria No. 179/2010 from 1 April 2022.
ANATEL's warranty declaration rule rests on Resolution 715/2019, Act 3939/2021 and the Consumer Protection Code, so the local representative takes on legal responsibility for after-sales support.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Brazil. Brazil's classified areas run from offshore pre-salt fields and FPSOs through coastal refining at Paulínia, Suape and Camaçari to inland mining and cane mills. Dust is significant: bagasse and sugar, grain at export terminals, and ore handling. Operators such as Petrobras classify their own areas, and SAMS does not.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.
The market guide for Brazil covers Santos Basin pre-salt, Campos Basin, Duque de Caxias, Paulínia, among others. Site-level pages are linked below.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Under Portaria 115/2022 the manufacturer or the importer can apply to an INMETRO-accredited certification body, and the certificate carries the INMETRO seal. Who holds the certificate and how the factory is audited depend on the model chosen, so confirm the details with an OCP.
Not directly. INMETRO requires certification by an accredited OCP under Portaria 115/2022, although an OCP may base its certificate on an IECEx test report and quality report under Model 5. ATEX and IECEx certificates alone do not give market access, so confirm the route with a Brazilian OCP.
Android 16 runs the interface in Brazilian Portuguese, and Portuguese documentation is part of the launch package. That matters for training records under NR-20 and NR-10, which auditors expect in the working language. Certification is still in progress, so documentation is not yet final. Ask the supplier for sample pages.
