A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
The town sits on the border of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana in the Shivalik foothills, about 65 km from Solan and close to Chandigarh, so road access from the plains is straightforward.
Pharma plants run quality-controlled areas, so introducing a new device into a classified room usually involves the plant's engineering, EHS and quality teams.
Baddi is also a large hub for third-party cosmetics manufacturing, so cosmetics and formulation plants sit alongside the pharma units.
The town stands at an average elevation of 426 metres, and had 29,911 residents in 2011 with a literacy rate of 86 percent.
India's Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation administers rules covering the storage and handling of petroleum products, flammable materials and pressure vessels, which are relevant to solvent stores in formulation plants.
Baddi houses 3,120 factories in pharma, FMCG, textiles and other sectors with an annual turnover of about Rs 60,000 crore, and is described as Asia's biggest pharmaceutical hub.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Baddi, Himachal Pradesh. The hazardous areas at Baddi are mainly rooms inside plants: solvent storage and dispensing, granulation and coating, reactor areas and warehouse solvent stores. Each plant's operator classifies its own rooms, not SAMS and not a device supplier. A buyer should obtain the classification record for the room before deciding where any handheld may go.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.
Likely candidates are solvent storage and dispensing, granulation and coating rooms, active ingredient reactor areas, warehouse solvent stores. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Baddi is in the foothills at about 426 metres elevation and has been ranked as a clean-air town. Summers can still be hot and monsoon rain is heavy, so check ratings for water, dust and temperature on the datasheet.
Baddi is close to Chandigarh and near the borders of three states, so most visitors fly into Chandigarh or Delhi and drive. Confirm gate procedures with the plant, because pharma sites often require strict hygiene and access control.
Usually yes. Pharma plants run quality-controlled areas, so engineering, EHS and quality teams normally review a new device before it enters a classified room. Confirm the approval steps with each plant. A certificate alone may not be enough if the plant also has contamination or data-integrity rules.
