Hazardous Area Smartphone Distributor in Australia

A Zone 1 / Zone 21 smartphone for crews on Australian LNG trains, offshore facilities, processing plants and remote mine sites. The Australian Communications and Media Authority regulates the supply of radiocommunications equipment and made rule changes in 2023 to simplify and streamline that regulation. Distribution partners for Australia are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.

More about Australia that matters for portable equipment

Australia: geography and layout

The Pilbara covers 507,896 square kilometres in the north of Western Australia, a large, dry, sparsely populated region known for iron ore, with four local government areas.

Australia: rules and approvals

ANZEx has been owned by JAS-ANZ since August 2016, and Queensland's Electrical Safety Regulation 2026 took effect on 1 September 2026, so state rules continue to evolve.

Australia: rules and approvals

Operators typically check for a current IECEx or ANZEx certificate, a suitable gas group and temperature class, a Hazardous Area Verification Dossier under AS/NZS 60079.14 and installer competency.

Australia: rules and approvals

An IECEx certificate for an assembly of several items is not automatically accepted unless it is validated against the current AS/NZS 60079.14 or the assembly is independently inspected.

The term · hazardous area

What “hazardous area” means for a smartphone

A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.

No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.

In Australia. Australian classified areas are large and far apart: LNG trains and offshore support at Karratha, Onslow, Darwin and Gladstone, gas processing at Moomba, and coal handling in the Bowen Basin. Coal dust makes Zone 21 a live classification, while iron ore and alumina are not normally combustible. Operators classify these areas themselves, not SAMS.

The route · distribution

Distributing the IS-04Z1 in Australia

SAMS is appointing authorised distributors ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No territory has been granted for Australia yet and applications are reviewed company by company. Because a certified Ex device cannot be opened by an ordinary phone workshop without invalidating its certificate, SAMS looks for partners who can provide competent technical support and after-sales service locally.

What SAMS looks for in a partner

Operator relationships
Existing supplier registrations or a clear route to them with the main operators and contractors in Australia.
Ex-competent staff
People who understand zone classification, markings and the conditions of a certificate.

And equally important

Local-language support
Documentation, training and helpdesk in the languages the workforce uses.
Service capability
Spares, battery replacement and repair routed through SAMS-approved channels.
Questions · Australia

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy a hazardous area smartphone in Australia today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.

What does a hazardous area smartphone in Australia cost?

No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.

Which hazardous areas is the IS-04Z1 designed for?

Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.

Which sites in Australia does this cover?

The market guide for Australia covers Karratha and the Burrup Peninsula, Onslow, Western Australia, Darwin, Gladstone and Curtis Island, among others. Site-level pages are linked below.

How do I become a SAMS distributor for Australia?

Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Australia.

What conditions affect devices in the Pilbara?

The Pilbara is hot, dry and dusty, with long distances between sites and towns. Check the operating temperature range, dust ingress rating and battery life in heat, and confirm with the operator any site rules on permits, inductions and mobile devices in classified areas.

What is the Hazardous Area Verification Dossier?

It is the installation documentation expected under AS/NZS 60079.14, showing that the equipment, its certificate and its installation suit the classified area. Operators and inspectors look for it before energising equipment, so ask the site electrical team what must be supplied with portable and fixed equipment.

Will a handset cope with Pilbara heat and a long roster day?

The target marking is T4 with the ambient range to be fixed on the certificate, which is not yet issued. The 4,000 mAh battery is sized for a roster day with radio, camera and GNSS running. Check the certified range against your site's worst summer ambient and trial a unit before fleet orders.
