Germany: logistics and access
Germany imported 96% of its petroleum and 89% of its natural gas in 2025, and imports covered 65.6% of its total energy needs, so ports, pipelines and storage terminals are central.
The IS-04Z1 is an eigensicheres Smartphone designed to ATEX 2014/34/EU for Zone 1 and Zone 21, built for the chemical parks, refineries and pharmaceutical plants where most German Ex-Schutz work happens. This page explains what to look for in a hazardous area mobile phone for Germany, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Germany: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Germany. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
Operators and classified areas drawn from the SAMS Germany market guide.
Germany imported 96% of its petroleum and 89% of its natural gas in 2025, and imports covered 65.6% of its total energy needs, so ports, pipelines and storage terminals are central.
Domestic hard coal production ended in 2018, so all hard coal is imported, adding port coal-handling and rail-transfer sites to Germany's dust-hazard areas.
Lignite is mined in the extreme west and east, mainly in North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony and Brandenburg, and burned in plants near the mines, so dust and fuel-handling hazards cluster in those regions.
In 2025 transport accounted for about 31% of energy consumption, households 28% and industry 26%, so fuel distribution and storage form a large part of the infrastructure.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Germany. German classified areas include chemical parks, refineries such as Karlsruhe and Schwedt, pharmaceutical plants, and LNG terminals at Wilhelmshaven and Brunsbüttel. The operator sets and documents each zone for gas and for dust. SAMS does not classify any area; the device is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Germany applies ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU for equipment and the employer-side Directive 1999/92/EC through national workplace law. Devices for Zone 1 and Zone 2 should carry CE and Ex markings with German-language instructions. Individual plants usually add their own device approval rules.
Typically the EU declaration of conformity, the ATEX or IECEx certificate, the Ex marking details and instructions in German. The operator's explosion protection document defines the zones. Provide a clear device marking photo so the site's inspector can match it to the zone.
Chemical park operators generally set contractor rules, including which devices are permitted in each zone. Requirements differ between parks. Ask the site operator about device approval, permits and registration, and about any managed-device policy, before bringing a handset to site.
