Malaysia: who works there
Malaysia Petroleum Management, a division of Petronas, oversees the whole lifecycle of the country's upstream oil and gas assets, so site rules for field equipment are typically passed down through the operator.
A Zone 1 and Zone 21 handset for Malaysian crews: process and maintenance technicians at Pengerang and Kertih, LNG operators at Bintulu, offshore production staff off Miri and Kimanis, and the safety and telecoms people who issue their equipment. Petronas is a vertically integrated group covering exploration, refining, distribution, power generation and trading, with subsidiaries such as Petronas Carigali for upstream, Petronas Chemicals for petrochemicals and Petronas Dagangan for marketing. Distribution partners for Malaysia are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Malaysia has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Malaysia. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The classified areas, operators and sites below are the ones covered in the SAMS Malaysia market guide.
Malaysia Petroleum Management, a division of Petronas, oversees the whole lifecycle of the country's upstream oil and gas assets, so site rules for field equipment are typically passed down through the operator.
Domestic oil production peaked in 2016 as large shallow fields matured, while natural gas plays an outsized role in energy planning, which keeps gas processing and LNG handling central to hazardous-area work.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), based in Cyberjaya, regulates communications under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, so radio and mobile-device rules sit with a different body from Ex rules.
Electrical and electronic products, petroleum products, LNG, chemicals and palm-oil-based manufactures are among the main exports, so processing sites range from petrochemical units to palm-oil mills.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Malaysia. Malaysia keeps its hazardous workforce in defined clusters: Pengerang in Johor, Kertih in Terengganu, Gebeng in Pahang, Bintulu and Miri in Sarawak, and the Kimanis gas terminal in Sabah, plus the offshore fields feeding them. The operator or site owner classifies each area, so zone drawings come from them, not from SAMS.
SAMS is appointing authorised distributors ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No territory has been granted for Malaysia yet and applications are reviewed company by company. Because a certified Ex device cannot be opened by an ordinary phone workshop without invalidating its certificate, SAMS looks for partners who can provide competent technical support and after-sales service locally.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.

Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Malaysia.
Normally the plant operator decides, through its HSE and instrumentation teams, usually by asking for ATEX or IECEx documentation against IEC 60079. Mobile radio approval is a separate matter handled under MCMC rules. Confirm both with the operator and your importer before ordering.
Sarawak's Miri area has the oldest upstream history, and Petronas Carigali runs the country's main exploration and production business. Gas processing and LNG are central to energy planning. Exact field and plant lists change, so confirm current sites with your client.
It is designed for Zone 1 with IP68 sealing and a 4,000 mAh battery, but offshore use depends on the platform's own classification and the certificate's ambient range. Crews cannot replace kit mid-hitch, so confirm battery plans, charging in safe areas and approval with the platform operator.
