Capacity figures
Wikipedia quotes 1.24 million barrels a day, while Reliance's current site quotes 1.4 million; the operator's figure is used here.
Tropical cyclones sometimes affect the area during the wet season, so operators plan for storm events. Process units, tank farms and marine facilities create extensive Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas. Wikipedia gives the refinery's commissioning as July 1999 and the site as over 7,500 acres, with utilities, port infrastructure and worker housing. Reliance's own site lists a refinery off-gas cracker and the world's largest petcoke gasifier.
The metropolitan area had about 877,000 residents in 2025, most speak Gujarati, and the literacy rate is about 82 percent.
The complex covers over 7,500 acres and includes utilities, port facilities and a 415-acre township for about 2,500 employees, according to a 2013 description.
The refinery was commissioned within 36 months, which means much of its equipment dates from around the turn of the century.
Jamnagar is known as the Brass City, with over 5,000 large and 10,000 small brass workshops, so local engineering and fabrication skills are widely available.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Jamnagar, Gujarat. Reliance describes extensive Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas across process units, petcoke gasification, the off-gas cracker and petrochemical units, tank farms and marine loading. The operator classifies these areas, not SAMS. PESO is the national regulator, and any device approval depends on Reliance's own site rules.
SAMS is appointing authorised distributors ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No territory has been granted for Jamnagar, Gujarat yet and applications are reviewed company by company. Because a certified Ex device cannot be opened by an ordinary phone workshop without invalidating its certificate, SAMS looks for partners who can provide competent technical support and after-sales service locally.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, petcoke gasification, refinery off-gas cracker and petrochemical units, crude and product tank farms. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Jamnagar, Gujarat.
The refinery complex handles over a million barrels a day plus petrochemical units and port facilities, so classified areas are extensive. The operator sets the zones and equipment rules, so confirm them before entering.
The area has a large industrial and fabrication base, including thousands of brass workshops, and a workforce that mostly speaks Gujarati. Operators still require site induction, so plan time for approvals.
Large sites mean long walks and long shifts, so battery life, charging points and a robust housing matter. Charging must happen in safe areas, not in classified ones. Ask the operator what charging and spare-device arrangements are permitted before planning a fleet.
