Jordan: projects and investment
A separate modernisation project with UOP and Technip aims for 73,000 barrels a day, and construction began in 2024 on a 10,000-tonne LPG storage facility intended for completion in 2026.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe handset for people who cross into classified areas in Jordan every shift: potash and phosphate plant operators, refinery crews at Zarqa, port operators at Aqaba, and the HSE and telecoms teams who equip them. This page explains what to look for in a hazardous area cell phone for Jordan, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Jordan: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Jordan. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The classified areas, operators and sites below are the ones covered in the SAMS Jordan market guide.
A separate modernisation project with UOP and Technip aims for 73,000 barrels a day, and construction began in 2024 on a 10,000-tonne LPG storage facility intended for completion in 2026.
Aqaba, at the north-eastern tip of the Red Sea, is Jordan's only seaport and is run by the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, with King Hussein International Airport nearby for equipment arrivals.
Jordan Phosphate Mines Company, founded in 1949, operates three mines and a chemical and fertiliser manufacturing complex in Aqaba, which it took over when it bought Jordan Fertilizer in 1986.
The Zarqa refinery produces about 60,000 barrels a day and a fourth expansion, contracted in 2023 to Sinopec Engineering, Technimont and Itochu, is intended to raise this to 150,000 barrels a day.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Jordan. Jordanian classified areas include potash extraction and processing at the Dead Sea, phosphate mining and beneficiation in the south, the Zarqa refinery, fuel storage terminals and the Aqaba port zone. The operator classifies each area, not SAMS. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Yes, Aqaba is Jordan's only seaport and most imported equipment arrives there, with the airport as an alternative for urgent shipments. Customs and zone rules differ, so agree clearance procedures with your importer before ordering and allow time for road transport to Zarqa or Amman.
Summers can be very hot and dusty, so check the maximum ambient temperature on the certificate, the dust and water ingress rating and battery behaviour in heat. Avoid leaving devices in vehicles or on hot equipment, and consider sunshades for outdoor work at the refinery or solar sites.
The IS-04Z1 has IP68 sealing for dust and water, but heat affects any battery. Ask for the datasheet's temperature range and trial a unit at a desert site. Site rules on charging and storing devices in safe areas still apply.
