Japan: geography and layout
The Keiyo Industrial Zone runs along the north-eastern coast of Tokyo Bay through eight cities in Chiba Prefecture, from Urayasu to Futtsu, including Chiba, Kisarazu and Ichihara.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe handset for people who cross into classified areas in Japan every shift: refinery and petrochemical-complex operators, LNG terminal crews, inspection engineers, and the HSE and telecoms teams who equip them. Buyers searching for an explosion proof smartphone supplier for Japan can take the datasheet and the certification schedule for the IS-04Z1 now; supply follows certification.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. An explosion proof smartphone for Japan cannot be bought yet: the SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued), and the datasheet, certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

As of July 2026 the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare lists eight registered examination bodies for this equipment, including TIIS and several bodies outside Japan.
Since a January 2017 notice an IECEx test report can be submitted as the applicant's prior test results, and a certificate is valid for three years.
The Port of Nagoya in Ise Bay is described as Japan's largest and busiest trading port, handling about 10% of the country's trade by value, and has been run by the Nagoya Port Authority since 1951.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Japan. Explosion-proof is the everyday phrase, but in Japanese complexes the protection concept matters. Flameproof Ex d suits some fixed equipment, while an intrinsically safe handset suits an operator crossing into classified areas every shift. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety for Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty.
Nothing can be bought for Japan today: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, and SAMS will supply end users through authorised distributors once certificates exist. What a buyer can do now is take the specification, ask for the written certification schedule and arrange a safe-area evaluation, so that the right local channel contacts you at launch.

Which certificates are in progress, in what order, and what is still to be confirmed.
Evaluation units can be used for connectivity, MDM enrolment and workflow testing outside classified areas.

No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.

Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.
Radio equipment is covered by the Telec technical conformity scheme, and the certified-products database can be searched to check a model. Requirements depend on the radio technologies in the device, so confirm with a registered certification body before importing.
Since 2017 an IECEx test report can be submitted as the applicant's prior test results, which can reduce testing, but the Japanese type examination certificate is still required, and it is valid for three years. Confirm the reports accepted with the chosen examination body.
The IS-04Z1 has IP68 sealing, which helps with water, dust and salt-laden air. That is an ingress rating only. Ask for the datasheet's operating ranges and test a unit during a humid season round at a coastal site.
