More about China that matters for portable equipment

China: geography and layout

China's land-based oil resources are mostly in the north, with large fields at Daqing, Shengli, Liaohe, Karamay and Dagang, so cold-climate and arid-climate sites are both common.

China: rules and approvals

The current implementing rule is CNCA-C23-01:2024, in force since 1 May 2024, and certification has been to the 2021 editions of GB/T 3836 since 1 May 2022.

China: rules and approvals

GB 3836.15-2024 on design, selection and erection and GB 3836.16-2024 on inspection and maintenance took effect as mandatory national standards on 1 August 2025, governing installations rather than product certification.

China: rules and approvals

Phones also need the MIIT network access licence (NAL) and SRRC radio approval; the NAL is described as compulsory, valid for three years, with local testing and a local representative required.

The term · explosion proof

What “explosion proof” means for a smartphone

“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.

The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.

In China. Explosion proof is the everyday phrase, but a coal mine and a coastal petrochemical plant need different thinking. Flameproof Ex d suits much fixed mining equipment; the IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety to limit energy in a handheld. It is designed for Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust, not underground classification. Operators classify areas, not SAMS.

The route · supply

Sourcing the IS-04Z1 for China

Supply of the IS-04Z1 to China starts only after certification, through authorised distributors. Until then a buyer can request the datasheet and the written certification schedule, and arrange a safe-area evaluation unit, which puts the site on the list for the right local channel at launch.

  1. 01

    Request the datasheet

The technical specification, marking target and conditions of use, sent by email.

  2. 02

    Ask for the certification schedule

Which certificates are in progress, in what order, and what is still to be confirmed.

  3. 03

    Evaluate in a safe area

Evaluation units can be used for connectivity, MDM enrolment and workflow testing outside classified areas.

  4. 04

    Register for launch

Tell us the site, zone, gas group and quantity so the right authorised distributor can contact you.

Questions · China

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an explosion proof smartphone in China today?

No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.

What does an explosion proof smartphone in China cost?

There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.

Is the IS-04Z1 explosion proof or intrinsically safe?

It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.

Which sites in China does this cover?

The market guide for China covers Shanxi, Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia, Daqing, Shengli oilfield, among others. Site-level pages are linked below.

How will SAMS supply China?

Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.

What climate range should devices handle in northern Chinese oilfields?

Fields such as Daqing in the north-east have cold winters, while Karamay and other north-western fields are arid, so a wide operating temperature range and dust ingress protection are sensible. Confirm site limits with the operator before deployment.

Can IECEx or ATEX certificates be used in China?

An IECEx test report is reported as recognised as test evidence, but it does not replace the CCC certificate, and ATEX certificates are not accepted. Plan a separate CCC programme with a designated body, using the IECEx test work to reduce duplication where permitted.

Is the phone suitable for underground coal mines?

The design covers Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust together, matching the combined methane and coal dust exposure, but certification is in progress and no certificate exists. Underground mining is a distinct classification regime, so a mine operator would need to confirm suitability. Check requirements with the mine safety authority.
